This was honestly a 'act first, think later' move. All Mike had thought was that he needed to save (Y/N). He didn't really think about how he was going to do that. He didn't think about the danger. He didn't think about what would happened if he were to confront the guy. He just went with his gut and chased them down.
And as heroic as that is, Mike regretted it right about now. He'd seen more than he'd even wanted to. This building, the Sanatorium, was like Hell. The first thing that hit Mike was the smell. It was pungent. Rotting wood, mold, and something he couldn't quite put his finger on.
Then, the look of the entire building. Mike didn't trust a single step he took. He saw how the floor had been broken at so many parts. The ceiling, as well, had collapsed in some areas. Debris littered the floor and there was so much dust in the air. It tickled Mike's lungs, but he kept quiet, trying not to cough. He didn't want to alert that guy that he was here.
And the things he had seen so far! He didn't have the key card to get into the main part of the building, so he had to go around. Mike had done some snooping. He was hoping to learn more about the guy that kidnapped (Y/N), but he learned some other stuff. Clocking-in cards, a broken camera, a newspaper... That was the most interesting thing he expected to find. But he ventured further into the Sanatorium.
The first thing he saw that made him want to turn around was the bird. It scared him near to death, but it had been eating something. There was... blood. Mike didn't know what from, but there was a machete there. He picked it up, noticing the blood stains on it. He took it with him, knowing he might need it later. Mike felt safer with protection.
He found a restraining chair was blood covering the seat. The smell was horrid, forcing itself into his nostrils until it felt like he couldn't breathe. But, despite at that, he kept going.
He found himself in another room. It felt like this place had no end. His eyes caught a hand, moving by some machine. It swayed back and forth, like a temptation. Mike figured this was for the wolves. A note on the arm caught his eye and he reached forward, curious to what it said.
Then the bear trap snapped shut, entrapping two of his fingers inside.
At first, Mike couldn't think. All he could feel was white, hot pain. He felt his vision go black for a second before he was in and out of reality. He felt a million things at once and none of them good.
He didn't even know if he screamed. He did, right? But he wasn't sure. His mind began to recollect itself. How long had he been dizzy for? How long had he been out of it? He shook his head, trying to think. Trying to get a grip on reality.
His body was moving faster than his thoughts. He was grabbing for the machete before he could even think to. Then, he was winding up his arm, ready to slice, before he had a chance to realize what he was doing. And then, his fingers were gone and he felt that flash of pain all over again.
Mike scrambled for a moment, trying to understand what the hell just happened. His eyes landed on some bandages. He grabbed them, thankful that they were real. He worried that he was hallucinating. He bandages his fingers as best he could, an okay job, before stuffing the remaining bandages in his jean pocket.
He felt dizzy. Like he wasn't in control of his body anymore. He didn't feel the pain anymore. It was numb, like his mind. He reached and grabbed the machete, storing it. He began to speak, trying to ground himself again. "Eeeny... meeny... miney... moh..." He whispered, blinking a few times. What the hell was he saying? "Catch a tiger... by the toe... if he... let him go..." Mike took a deep breath. The spinning stopped and his mind began to clear. "I don't know... what the fuck... to go."
Mike wanted to turn around. To get the fuck out of here before he got hurt even worse. He thought about it. He wanted to. But his mind drifted back to (Y/N). Seeing the fear in his eyes. The trembling of his body. Those ropes around his wrists... He couldn't turn back. He needed to save him.
~~~
(Y/N) had watched as the man had gotten his supplies. Gas, knife, a gun... The two had barely exchanged words. Except for when the man revealed his name to be 'Jack.' (Y/N) had repeated his own name, to which Jack chuckled at him. Fear had made his mind become hazy. All he could focus on was the man and the ropes around his arms.
The two walked back to the main part of the building. When they got there, (Y/N) noticed that only one wolf remained. He didn't like not knowing where the other creature was. "Where is the other one...?" He asked. He didn't mean to, but the words slipped out of his mouth.
The man didn't seem to mind the question. He shrugged. "Probably checking to make sure everything is okay, I guess." The man began to get organized. He put the guns in his pockets, the bandana back on, and his goggles on his forehead.
"What are you doing?"
"Me?" The man chuckled. "I'm gonna make sure none of your friends get themselves killed."
(Y/N) pauses. "And me?"
"You're gonn' come with me."
"What!?"
The man smiles. "Or I could leave you to fend for yourself."
(Y/N) bites him lip, thinking. "Can I... At least get a gun?" He would feel much better with a gun. Those creatures were unlike anything he'd ever seen. A gun would help, right?
Jack hesitated before pointing towards something. "That gun is yours."
(Y/N) looked. The gun was impossible to get. It was behind bars. (Y/N) sighed. "I get it."
Jack laughed. "Alright, alright. Listen to me good, okay?"
(Y/N) nodded. "Okay."
~~~
As if things couldn't get any worse... Mike had been chased by a wolf. Those things were a lot bigger up close. Mike had barely escaped, slamming the door behind him just in time. (Y/N) heard the slam, and looked up to the window. Mike, hearing a voice, walked up to the window.
The two met eyes. Mike burst into a smile, glad to see he was still alive. (Y/N) looked happy as well. Happier than Mike had seen since last year. (Y/N)'s smile faltered, however, and he looked back at the man.
(Y/N) knew he couldn't be saved right now. So he gestured his head towards the gun Jack had talked about. Mike followed the direction and saw it. He nodded, giving (Y/N) a thumbs up so he knew Mike understood. (Y/N) smiled again, then focused back on Jack.
Jack had finished talking. He grabbed the roes and pulled (Y/N) forward, the two going through a door. Mike felt his heart drop again. It wasn't fair. He was so close...
Mike sighed. At least (Y/N) was still alive. He didn't look hurt. And his smile... Mike snapped out of his thoughts. (Y/N) had shown him where the gun was.
