RD - 13: The trial

Pearl continued reading.

The conquest of that far away planet did not take long. Soon I was back at my chambers with my gems. I was dying to see them and to take a nap.

"How did you do in my absence?" I asked, wanting them only to confirm what I already knew.

"We did fine!" said Ruby, "How was the war?"

"Violent" I said, "Those natives really knew how to fight... And those stone sticks... Hurt a lot! But even though it was hard, I broke one... Or rather, one of the natives broke it by hitting my head."

"How was it that your empty head did not split open?" Ruby asked teasingly.

"Reddy, the only empty head here is yours!" I said, teasing back and we all laughed.

Not long after my return, a week maybe, I got summoned to a trial.

"Trial? Who is the accused gem and what are the charges?" I asked.

"Insubordination and violence against their master. The accused is..." started Topaz.

"Who is it?" I asked again.

"I think it's best if you see it for yourself," said Topaz, pointing at the screen.

I got bigger and sat at the diamond throne. Then, Top started a video showing the moment of the crime. I couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't know if I should laugh or feel despair or laugh out of despair.

The video showed a corridor where a morganite and their pearl were walking through. From a lateral door came a small unorganized squad of rubies. The last ruby bumped into the pearl slightly and made her drop whatever she was holding in her hands. It wasn't possible to see what it was really, but it broke. The rubies left and the pearl started collecting the broken pieces. Morganite was clearly angry with the pearl. The video didn't have audio but it was possible to see that the morganite said something the pearl didn't like. The pearl brought her spear out of her head jewel and stood up, quickly and skillfully positioning herself at the morganite's back, the spear at their throat, dangerously close to the jewel. Then, the video ended.

"I can't believe she did that!" I said.

"Only because it's a pearl?" Pearl said 'aloud' beside me.

"It's not that!" I said "From all the places she could've done it, she picked the one with a camera! She can't even try saying her master is lying!"

"Do you know her, Red?" Ruby asked me.

"It's the pearl that helped me conquer the planet where Pink was made!" I said as I stood up, I just couldn't stay put. "I can't go to the trial without first thinking of a way to save her!"

I started pacing back and forth, agitated and nervous. My gems had never seen me like that, so they were getting a little scared. Even Sapphire, who hardly expressed anything, was apprehensive.

"Comets and asteroids! Why couldn't she keep quiet?! And if she is condemned, I will be the one responsible for shattering her! I can't do that..." I thought aloud.

"Red..." Topaz called me insecurely, "it's time."

"Damn it! Come with me Top," I said, getting out of my chambers still in my diamond size, walking fast, Topaz barely managing to follow me. Wherever I went, I attracted looks, since it was unusual for me to walk around like that.

When I made it to the trial's room, I looked around me and saw Top still running to catch up with me. Only then, I noticed how fast I had walked.

I waited until she got to me, then we entered the backroom together where the diamonds stayed before being announced by their pearls, in my case a topaz, and then entering the main room.
