I went to school with my husband's younger cousin Harry, while I wasn't necessarily friends with him I knew who Harry was and we were what I'd call acquaintances. We talked occasionally, mostly about classes and he'd ask me for help in Potions class, but other than that we didn't really interact with each other.
After graduating Hogwarts I went to work in the Muggle world, working as a secretary at Grunnings Drills in Surrey starting in mid 1998. I still work there today but people seem to think that I literally slept my way to the top of the company because I'm married to the director's son.
I didn't know Dudley was Vernon's son, not at first anyway, we didn't give our last names to each other until things became more physical, what was the point in giving someone your full name if you were only planning on going on one or two dates with them? After the third date, when things changed and we gave each other more information about one another, things became awkward.
I'd told him that I worked at Grunnings, he'd asked if I knew Vernon Dursley, I'd said something along the lines of 'Yes, I'm his assistant' then Dudley had said 'He's my dad, I'm Dudley Dursley'. I hadn't known if he'd told his father about these dates or not, I learned later on that he didn't tell his dad until AFTER this conversation but Vernon had been surprisingly happy about the relationship..... that was until he found out I'm a witch.
I didn't tell Dudley about me being a witch until after we'd been dating for 6 months, it's not something we witches and wizards bring up in everyday conversations with Muggles, but he was really accepting of the fact I have magical abilities. He'd slowly opened up after my confession, talking about his cousin, that he regretted being so mean to him growing up, and that he wished he could fix that relationship but that he was pretty sure it was irreversibly damaged.
When Vernon found out, however, it was a completely different story. Vernon was livid! He'd all but ordered Dudley to break off the relationship, telling him I was absolutely no good for him and that I'd drag him down just like Harry had their entire family for 17 years, Dudley didn't listen but it still hurt to hear my boss say something like that about me when I'd been nothing but nice to him.
Vernon and his wife Petunia didn't attend our wedding, it was some sort of protest on Vernon's part, and while Petunia had wanted to come she decided to stand behind her husband instead. I understood why Petunia was standing by her husband's decision, but it broke Dudley's heart when he realized that the two chairs we'd reserved for them were both empty.
We went on our honeymoon, came back, and tried to go back to our lives as normal but it wasn't that simple. Vernon wanted me out of the company, and while he was nice in front of customers or coworkers, Sunday night dinners at 4 Privet Drive were now awkward and tense.
