As quickly as I could I walked back to my room. The adrenaline from my fight with the guard, and the anger from my interactions with the human were still fresh in my mind. I could only hope that my parents wouldn't try to surprise me with any more infuriating responsibilities. Why would they even do that? It shouldn't be my job to deal with that menace.
It was because of this morning. I let out a sigh at the realisation. Hopefully, when I apologise I won't have to deal with the human anymore. I walked over to my bed and collapsed onto the comfortable mattress. God, I'm going to have to go through the whole day before I'll have the chance to do that.
"Damn it," I groaned, although it was muffled by my pillows.
As I went through the familiar schedule of my day my adrenaline was quick to fade, however, my annoyance remained. I couldn't stop thinking about that damned pest. It didn't affect my lessons much, but it still pissed me off that they managed to worm their way into my mind and refused to leave.
I laid on the fluffy carpet in my room, mentally recovering from the hell that is math class. My gaze found itself back on my clock, which read 7:36. Dinner is so close yet so far. It's only 24 minutes away. I let out a long sigh. Curse my parents and their damn near 12-hour work days.
Slowly, I started to get up. I may as well wait in the dining room. It's not like I have anything better to do. Before I left I stopped by my bookshelf and grabbed a book that I had been wanting to read. Its faux leather cover slipped comfortably into my hand as I started toward my door.
As soon as I got into the hallway I closed and locked it, making sure my key was secure in my pocket. After this morning I don't think I'll be able to leave it unlocked for a while. I turned and started down the hallway. My slow footsteps echoed through the ancient halls. Distant mutterings of conversations between palace staff floated through the air, too distorted for what was said to be made out.
This walk was familiar, I'd made it over a thousand times yet I still couldn't help but worry that I'd done something wrong and won't be allowed to eat. I know the king and queen would never do that. They never have before. If I ever did something wrong they'd just talk to me about it, yet I still couldn't shake this fear. Although it might be different today. They did decide I needed to be the one to deal with the human.
I pushed this thought from my mind as I made my way into the dining room. I sat in my seat, opened the book I had brought, and started reading. I got lost in the fictional world even if it was just for a moment. The twenty-some minutes I had to wait passed in what felt like only a few moments. As the familiar footsteps of the king and queen grew closer I quickly finished the page I was on folding the corner because I forgot a bookmark and placed it in my lap.
Just before they walked through the entrance I corrected my posture. Both of them paused for a moment when they saw me sitting at the table. The king was the first to shrug this off and continue to their seat and the queen followed shortly after.
"You're a bit early today," Mom hummed, the fatigue from their day was obvious in their voice.
"Yeah, I guess I am," I tried to smile, but it was quick to fall so I gave up. "I wanted to apologise for this morning." I brought my gaze over to the king, "I'm sorry for what I said to you."
"I'm sorry you're anti-social," Mama said plainly. I wanted to say something else, but that sentence caused my mind to blank.
"Rozala," The queen hissed.
"Vev," The king said as they glanced at mom.
"I- Um, okay, thank you?" I stuttered, not knowing what else to say. During that mess, a member of the palace staff started bringing out our plates of food.
