Readers. This is a message for you:
Within this story, you have to choose an option.
You can read up to chapter 10, when you will have to make a choice.
Until you have to make this choice, then this is how the book will go.
This is a 74th Hunger Games with the POV from Marvel, the boy from district 1.
This isn't a love story. This isn't a redemption ark. This is a POV from a character who is often overlooked.
Enjoy.
........................................................................
This is it. This is the year, the year I win the Hunger Games.
As I walk over to the other 17 year old boys, I feel others pat me on the back as I pass. Familiar faces from the Academy and even some who I don't even know. Some even move out of my way, they know that it's my year. Everyone does, district 1 always has volunteers, and this year is no different.
Minutes pass, soon the hall fills up with around 3-4 thousand children. None of which look too upset about the reaping, unlike other districts. Everyone knows that even if they get drawn; someone will take their place in the games.
The anthem is sung, the video is played. Now for the moment everyone is waiting for.
Madam Zimbe crosses the stage, her canary yellow high heels clicking against the tiled floor. She is the perfect impression of Capitol people. Bright green hair, big poofy blue dress, her dark oak coloured skin shimmering with gold glitter that shone even from a distance. She stands out like a sore thumb compared to us. Even when we are dressed at our best for the reaping, with girls in pastel dresses and boys in smart looking pants. Silently, she draws out a slip of paper from the girls bowl.
"Jewel Grove."
Before the girl could even be identified, a blonde girl steps out of the line of 17 year olds.
"I, Glimmer McCarthy, volunteer."
Madam Zimbe smiles down at her, and in her thick Capitol accent:
"Of course dear, come right on up."
Glimmer strutted up to the stage, clearly loving the attention. Her family and friends cheering form the crowd.
Weak. Can't even shoot an arrow straight, but better to have an ally you can easily ditch than one you need to rely on. I wish I was paired with the girl who volunteered last year, she was real good. Shame she was killed so early on.
Glimmer stands on the stage, winks at a nearby camera before going back to watching Madam swirl her hand through the slips of paper for the boys.
"And for the boys... Jack Medallion."
This is it
I take a step forward.
"I, Marvel Sanford volunteer as tribute."
The surrounding boys let out a whoop, and start patting me on the back.
"Yeah, let's go Marvel! Woo!"
Madam Zimbe beckons me up to the stage. Savouring every moment, I make my way up to the stage.
This is the moment you've been waiting for. All that work, dedication and training taking up all my time, all for this.
I can feel everyone's eyes on me, the whole of Panem is watching.
"Round of applause for the volunteers of district 1, do your district proud- and may the odds be ever in your favour."
