Someone was knocking on her door. It was still completely black outside and Nova was in no mood to wake up this early in the day, yet they persistently pounded against the wood. She did feel more refreshed today though, her headache had dulled massively overnight and she no longer felt so sick.

"Nova, this is Nick. I know you're awake, get ready and meet me outside the Homestead as soon as you're dressed. This is important." Once she heard him leave, she pulled herself up from her bed and groaned. What the hell was so important that he thought, 'Yes, wake the new girl up at this horrible hour!'. Stupid place, stupid boys.

Opening the door, she reached down to pick up the clothes Nick had left outside her door the night before. The contents included: a black zippy jumper which was five sizes too big, but would do perfectly for the cool nights ahead of her, and a shirt, again, way too big for her, grey sweatpants and underwear. Thank god for clean underwear, even if everything he'd brought her was made for men, she was very happy with the selection.

Nova quickly changed into the clean things but decided against the sweatpants. Her cargo pants would do, they weren't too dirty and would suit the weather better. She also left the jumper, she could always come back for it if it was too cold. Making her way back out the room, she felt for the knife in her pocket to make sure it was still there.

When she opened the door to the outside, she had to adjust her eyes to the darkness to make out the silhouette of Nick. He waved to Nova and started walking, and she had to run to catch up with him.

"We need to hurry, it will be morning soon. Didn't realise girls took so long to get ready..." He said, glancing at Nova, smiling to himself.

"I did not take long! Where are we going that's so important anyway?" She shook her head at his annoying way of starting conversation, although it was much better than idle small talk.

"C'mon, you'll see soon enough." Nick replied, increasing his pace. She had to basically run to keep up with his much longer legs. They were headed towards the western wall which shape loomed above them, blocking out any sign of the rising sun.

When they finally reached the wall, he stopped and Nova hurried along so she stood next to him. Nick reached into the wall and pulled the ivy away to reveal a dusty window, about half a metre wide in a square shape. She couldn't see in because his head was blocking the view from inside.

"What are you doing? What are you looking for in there?"

"Just you wait, one'll come soon enough." A few minutes ticked by, Nova moved her head around him, trying to make out any shapes in the window and slowed her breathing as best as she could, to ease the anxiety.

"Out there's the Maze. Our whole lives - from the moment we wake up - revolve around it. Every minute of every day we try to solve it, sending runners out to risk their lives finding a solution." Nick's gaze was fixed solely on the window. "I'm here, showing you why it isn't something you can go into when you feel like it. Those walls close every night for a reason, and you never want to find yourself on the wrong side of them." He stopped looking into the window and gazed at Nova. He motioned for her to come closer to the window, and moved out the way.
