Maham had been extremely quiet. She had always been quiet but she was quieter in front of Zayan. Aaima and Abdul's proposal was sealed. And even if Aaima said and did some wrongful things no one deserved a husband like Abdul. Her sickness has been getting worse. She had been throwing up recently a lot and she had assumed it was because of Abdul. But her body was also changing so she decided to go to the hospital. She grabbed her wallet, put a dupatta over her head, and wrapped a chadar around her figure, she quickly left before anyone could see.
She sat in the backseat of a rikshaw, staring blankly into space. She needed to speak up. She needed to tell Zayan about what kind of a man Abdul was. She needed to save Aaima from that monster.
She sat for a while in the waiting room before a nurse called her in. An ultrasound was done and she was waiting inside the office for results. She hoped it was nothing serious. She looked around, thinking of ways to start the conversation with Zayan. She didn't have the confidence to say it.
The doctor stepped inside and smiled at her, comfortably. "Congratulations, Mrs. Agha. You're expecting."
Maham froze. It was a surprise, yes, but it could've happened considering how active Zayan and her were. A smile covered her lips and her eyes brightened. She was pregnant. With a baby. Her baby. She could start a family. Family that will be filled with love, happiness, and peace.
Everything that she wanted for herself.
"You're four weeks pregnant," The doctor said and Maham smiled at her, nodding.
"Thank you," Maham said, smiling widely. She took the files and left, smiling widely.
Her pregnancy gave her confidence. She needed to speak up about it because even if her family doesn't do anything about Abdul. Zayan surely would. Maham would rather die than let her kid grow up in that environment.
When she entered her house, the ground slipped from her feet. Abdul sat there laughing and talking with Zayan and Osman. Maham decided to walk past them, not bothering to greet any of them.
"Arey, bhabhi," Osman teased making her freeze. "Mil toh lein at least hamse,"
(At least greet us.)"Han, bhabhi," Osman talking to her wasn't what raised her anger level. It was Abdul's audacity to talk -- to even glance at her -- and call her 'sister-in-law' with that sinister undertone in his voice. She stopped and turned around glaring at him. Her confidence level had to be in the sky.
"Besharam. Jahil insaan. Kutte. Kamine," When she said the first word, Abdul's eyes widened and his smirk dropped. The rest of the two men's eyes widened as well.
(Shameless. Illiterate man. Dog. Bastard.)"Tumhe kya laga mai chup rahongi?" She asked and grabbed a tea-filled cup before throwing it towards him.
(Did you think I will stay quiet?)"Maham!" Zayan yelled, standing up but Maham ignored him, watching as Abdul jumped and stood up, as he was burned.
"Is ghar se niklo! Is ghar se niklo aur kabhi bhi apni shakal mat dikha warna police bola longi! Dafa ho!" Maham yelled and Abdul ran out.
(Get out of this house! Get out and never show your face ever again or I will call the police! Get lost!)"Maham, tumhara dimagh kharab hogaya hai?!" Zayan yelled, gripping her arm and turning her around to face him. Everyone was present now.
(Maham, are you out of your mind?!)Maham blinked and looked as if she didn't realize what had happened. As if she had blacked out the moment she started yelling. She didn't know where the confidence came from but it felt nice to yell at him. But now she was terrified of the outcome.
She pushed Zayan's arm away and walked towards Aaima, "Aaima, yeh larka sahi nahi tha. Tum- tum nahi janti issue yeh bohut bura aadmi tha," She spoke as Aaima stared at her confused, curious, and also angry.
(Aaima, he wasn't a good guy. You- you don't know him he's an awful guy.)Before Aaima could say something, Asma walked towards her and slapped her with her full strength making Maham's head turn to the other side with a giant force. Tears welled up in her eyes because of the pain.
"Meri ka ik aur rishta barbaad kardiya tune!" Asma yelled and Maham slowly looked at her tears running rapidly down her cheeks.
(You ruined another one of my daughter's proposals.)"Aap log us family ko nahi jante! Woh ik ghatiya insaan hai. Aaima ko deserve hi nahi karta tha," Maham spoke, talking back surprising a few family members. "Aap log bohut pachta te usse shaadi karwa kar," She said and then ran upstairs.
(You don't know that family! He was an awful man. He didn't deserve Aaima. You people would've regretted marrying her to him.)Zayan was too angry to follow her upstairs and demand an explanation. An hour later, Asma got a call from Abdul's mother. She scaredly picked it up and put it on speaker. His mother was angry and then Asma spoke of Maham yet again as if she was a mental person.
"Bas bohut howa. Ham pehle chup the kyun keh hame Aaima pasand thi. Magar ab nahi. Woh randi, Maham. Usne mere bete ko jaal mai phaisaya. Mera beta bohut masoom hai, bohut seedha sadha hai aur Maham ne uska faida uthaya. Meri beti, Ayesha, ki college ki dost huva karti thi. Ik din Ayesha ne usse ghar par bolaya aur tabhi Maham ne apne rang dikhaye. Mere bete keh pass saboot bhi hai!" The woman spoke using awful words for Maham.
(Enough. We were quiet before because we liked Aaima. But not anymore. That slut, Maham. She trapped my son in a trap. My son is very innocent and very simple and Maham took advantage of that. She was a college friend of my daughter, Ayesha. One day Ayesha invited her to our home and that's when Maham showed her true colors. My son has proof!)
Zayan couldn't handle it. Everyone was staring at the phone in shock. Zayan couldn't handle this unknown woman calling her wife such awful words. He was in a rage hearing her call Maham a slut. He stormed towards Asma and snatched the phone.
"Apko koi haq nahi hai aap meri biwi ke baare mai itne ghalat alfaaz nikale. Bohut jhoot bol diya apne aur hamne bohut jhoot sun liya hamne. Nahi karna hamne aapke bete ke saath," Zayan said and cut the call, handing Asma the phone.
(You have no right to call my wife such disgusting words. You said a lot of lies and we heard a lot of lies. We don't want to have a relationship with your son.)"Unho ne ik video bheji hai," Asma said, handing him the phone.
(She sent a video.)
