I slam the door of Marcia's car shut and wave her goodbye as she drives off. I put my handbag with Finnick's birthday gift, a bottle of Jack Daniels since that was the only thing I could get my hands on at the restaurant, over my shoulder and head to the origin of the humming music. I honestly hope he likes whiskey because if he doesn't it's going to be a hell of an awkward first meet. Nothing worse than buying a present for someone and seeing the mortification on their face when they realize what it is. At least Brooke would happy with the newest addition to her collection if Finnick wouldn't want the bottle.
I'm not even halfway across Colin's driveway when the music's volume increases, drawing my attention to the front door. Colin hurries out of the house but slows his pace when his eyes land on me. The corner of his mouth turns up and I look down at my feet to hide the idiot smile spreading across my face. After a second of trying to tone down whatever his Golden Retriever grin was doing to me, I look back up.
He's changed his white dress shirt for a dark green T-shirt and got rid of the black pants our work requires and put on grey shorts. Apparently, white isn't the only color this man can rock. To my demise, he looks sexy in everything.
"Great, you're right on time." Knowing it's half past 12, I'm guessing he isn't talking about the party.
"For what? What is happening?"
"A mansion has a pool and Finnick and Matteo want to sneak in to take a swim." I blink a few times before I translate his words.
"They want to break in?!" My voice is louder than I expected and Colin holds his index finger in front of his lips to shush me. I repeat my words, this time whisper yelling them because what the actual fuck.
"I've tried to talk them out of it," he defends himself. Is he joining them? Is this why we're walking away from his house instead of heading inside? He can't be joining them, right?
"How did it go?"
"Matteo doesn't give a shit because he hates the guy. A few weeks ago, Nala ran away and ended up digging a marvelous hole in this man's petunias. He tried to poison her for it." I slap my hand in front of my gaping mouth.
"What?! Is she okay?" Who would do something like that? What kind of person do you have to be to try to poison an innocent little dog like Nala? And that over flowers that can grow back, not that any other reason would justify his actions. The monster.
"Matteo got there before he could. Luckily Daniel was with him or he would've knocked the guy unconscious." Violence is never the solution but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be happy if he could've landed a punch or two. "Or at least I think he wouldn't have stopped after one punch. He's got quite the temperament, surely with Nala. One bad word and you're blacklisted."
"Did they report him at least?"
"They wanted to but they couldn't prove anything. It would be a one-on-one and who do you think they'd believe? A rich salesman or a 21-year-old college student with multiple noise complaints on his record coming from that same salesman?" I scowl at the sound of his statement.
