"So you haven't even stolen candy from the candy shop as a kid?" I continue the conversation to avoid an awkward silence consisting of both of us ignoring what just happened. Now we can do that whilst having a conversation. How lovely.

"I did. Then I took two steps out of the shop and brought it back because I felt too guilty." Somehow that doesn't surprise me. I can imagine an 11-year-old Colin turning himself in because he stole some candy or bringing it back in this case.

"And now you won't?"

"Maybe. Maybe not. It helps that the owner is an asshole and I'm not going to lie, a swimming pool does sound amazing right now." Even at the end of September, the weather is still summer worthy with its warm temperatures and clear skies, making it a perfect night for a swim. If only the swimming pool would be on public grounds, that would be the chef's kiss.

"Are you scared?"

"That we'll get caught?" He looks over his shoulder and I nod. "Obviously." I briefly observe him. His shoulders might be a bit tense but his face shows nothing but sheer comfort.

"You look composed." He chuckles, clearly finding the conclusion I drew from my observation amusing.

"I'm dying on the inside."

"Good," I reply, allowing myself to join him in his laughter. "That makes two of us then."

"What a great team we make, don't you think?" He ducks down for a tree branch and I copy his swift movements.

"Your sarcasm is helping here."

"Your words aren't very reassuring either, miss we're-breaking-the-law-on-repeat."

"Shut up," I laugh, shoving him forward. "Why are we doing this again?"

"Because my irresponsible friends decided they wanted to have some fun."

"Hey, dipshits!" We both stop and my eyes widen in panic. My head snaps to Colin who still looks fucking relaxed. Is he smiling? He's smiling. Dying on the inside my ass. I want to run, no, sprint back to his house and I almost do but right before I take off, the anonymous voice yells at us again. "Stop fucking chitchatting and climb over the fence!" My nerves ease as I realize it's one of Colin's friends screaming and not the owner of the house.

I eye the fence wrapped in ivy and I have to look up way too far for my liking.

Climb over? Who do they think I am? An acrobat? A professional fence climber? Spiderman?

I turn back to Colin already regretting tagging along in this ridiculous idea.

"It better be a fucking gigantic pool."

His lip twitches as he tries to hold back his laughter. "With waterslides?"

"Preferably." I hand him my handbag and his hand drops a few inches as he readjusts his arm to the unexpected weight.
