Daniel angrily bit his pickle and mumbled under his breath at the band playing the Kibitz Room. He swallowed half of his pint of beer in two swallows as he squinted at a dancing Daisy and Nina.

The stage was just about a small ledge with an acoustic guitarist, flutist, and singer. Everyone was enveloped in smoke from cigarettes and joints. Some were drowsy and swaying from odorless highs.

Nick shushed Daniel as he booed the colorful band. The three men were draped in clothes one would see Indians and Natives wear. They were like rainbows.

"Rock 'n' roll is hard, dark, and untamable." Daniel scowled at the men whose hair was longer than his. "Not colorful and..." He waved a hand.

Bonnie rolled her eyes. "It's psychedelic folk music, not rock. Stop being so bitter, at least they're up there. People like them." She waved a hand at the dancing and smiling people. The room held merely twenty, but not a single person was upset—except Daniel. "They're sweet and invited us."

"Invited you. For your birthday."

"So stop raining on my parade with your lousy attitude."

The men hunted through Themis two days ago, unsure of what to pair together for what they claimed would be their debut. Selene was in a drug induced sleep, leaving Bonnie the honor of spending hours playing dress up with the men.

Daniel placed a hand on Bonnie's cheek and pouted his lips. "I'm so dearly sorry, will you ever forgive me?" His pout became a frown when his eyes focused on the men on stage. "The god awful singer keeps making eyes at you."

Daniel waved a hand for another beer.

Nick looked between Bonnie and Daniel. She smiled while he frowned. The barkeeper ignored him, seemingly cutting him off.

"Why don't you kickstart your own musical career?" Nick asked. "They have an album out and you don't. That's why you're upset. They're doing what you should be doing."

"I can't believe I'm five years to thirty," Bonnie mumbled to herself.

"What a great motivational speech," Daniel said flatly, standing from his chair. "I'm gonna go piss."

Nick grabbed Daniel's arm. Frowning, Daniel stared down at Nick.

"I'm serious, Dan."

He pulled his arm free. "I'll think about it."

Bonnie was smiling with her hands to her heart when the band thanked all the lovely people. She floated over to them as they hopped down from the ledge.

This birthday was by far the simplest she had yet, but she preferred it that way. Work was hardly work. Everyone laid around drinking, smoking, and sharing stories. The highlight of her day was her mother calling and reading a letter Tony sent for her birthday. He couldn't remember her address so he mailed it home. She cried, and now felt her face growing warm just at the thought of his words.
