Arriving back at the compound, Sarah raced after the other Avengers as they carried her father into the medical bay. She stood by the door and watched in fear as they strapped him to the machines and began to work. Nat turned and walked towards her, seeing her upset and guilt ridden.
"It's all my fault." Sarah muffled, as she rasped through her cries. Peter came behind her and she turned to him and took his embrace as a comfort. Holding him tightly. Nat stood behind the pair and patted Peter on the shoulder,
"Parker, can you take her back to her room, we don't know how long they're gonna be in surgery. Besides she could really use a friend" Peter nodded and led a distressed Sarah to her room.
Reaching Sarah's room, Peter closed the door behind her. Watching as she made her way into the centre of the room. Her tears grew louder and more painful to hear. Peter took a minute before going toward her. He placed his hand on her side and as she turned to him she looked into his eyes and melted into his embrace.
"I'm sorry Peter. For everything." He stroked the back of her head in comfort and shushed her. He knew what had happened and he knew that the girl he had grown to admire was not capable of any hatred.
"It's okay Rogers." He kept her tightly in his arms, comforting her knowing the next few hours were crucial, but he would stay with her as long as she needed.
Eventually Sarah fell asleep on her bed wrapped in Peter's arms, she blamed herself for what happened to her father. Crying about the hurtful words she'd said when she was under Loki's influence. If he hadn't come back for her, he wouldn't be in surgery fighting for his life. And if he died, she would never forgive herself.
2 days later:
Sarah hadn't heard or seen anything about Steve. She hadn't seen or spoken to anyone. No one would tell her anything and she was not allowed anywhere near the medical bay. Peter had been her only source of companionship. In the training room, they were sparring partners. In her room they helped each other study and distracted one another from real world problems. Today however was different, she felt like going for a walk to clear her mind for a while. Wrapping up in her mom's old sweater and her black all-star sneakers, Sarah headed out for a walk around the compound. As she walked around she noticed the guards and other members of staff were busier than usual, they were so focused that they didn't even notice her.
'What's going on?' she thought. Sarah quickened her pace before racing towards Fury's office.
She slowed down as she got closer, hearing voices echoing through the room. Reaching the entrance of the door, Sarah loitered around it and found everyone standing at the other end of the room. They were all conversing when suddenly Nick noticed her and loudly asked,
"Everything alright Miss Rogers?" Nick startled Sarah and made everyone else turn to face her. She slowly walked in to the middle of the room and nodded her head responding with,
"Yeah I just...Is everything alright in here? It's just I haven't seen or heard anything about my dad for a few days now... is he okay? Has something happened to him?" Every began to smile as a knocking noise came from behind her.
"Why don't you ask him yourself?" Nick replied as he looked behind her, Sarah noticed the rest of the avengers in the room staring behind her and in confusion she slowly turned around. There in the doorway stood her father. Steve Rogers.
"Dad!" She gasped in shock, he smiled at her and Sarah found herself running to him and into his embrace. Steve lifted his daughter into his arms and held her tightly. She felt his breath in her ear as he whispered,
"Sarah." Sarah was so happy that he was alright. She couldn't help but cry. Steve lowered her down and lifted her face up with his hand,
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry about what I said. I didn't mean it" She rasped as she looked into her father's eyes. "Everything's okay. I know you didn't mean what you said." He comfortingly said, pulling her to his chest in a tight embrace, rubbing her back in comfort as he did when she was a child.
"It's okay Sarah. Loki got into your head, trust me, been there and done that." Clint said, trying to make her feel better. Nat added,
"We all say things sometimes out of anger. It doesn't mean that we don't forgive you."
"Besides we now know that you can kick your old man's ass now. So that's something to brag about." Tony sarcastically said, making Sarah and Steve smile. Steve pulled her out of his chest and looked into his daughter's eyes,
"I know you did what you had to do to survive, that's how I got to where I am. I always do what I think is best and sometimes it isn't always the right thing..." Steve took a breath as he remembered Sharon, "I loved your mother and I promised her I would keep you safe... and I intend to keep that promise until the day I die." Sarah smiled and responded softly with,
"She'd be proud of you dad." He hugged her with one arm. Smiling as her words were a comfort to him. "And I know you only tried to keep me safe but I'm not a child anymore. I'm not a fragile little girl." Steve gave a small exhale of breath and smiled but before he could speak Fury interrupted with,
"On that note, we need a team to go and investigate the Mexican border. We've received intelligence about a truck that's transferring dangerous cargo...we need to see what this cargo is and make sure it doesn't end badly." Sarah looked up at her dad as did the rest of the avengers.
"Then we all go together...alright suit up."
The End.
