MEET DONTRELL💙
DONTRELL POV.
Brittney and I sat and talked while we ate and if it's one thing I can say about her, it's that she's always talking about meaningful and relevant topics about the world. Once the topic gets personal, she shifts gears. It's nothing wrong with that. It's not of my business anyway. But I can tell she's probably dealing with a lot of problems. She was still a mystery to me.
Brittney and I are laughing.
I wipe my mouth with a napkin. "You're cool. I like you.", I said. "As a person. You seem down to earth."
"...I like you too", Brittney said with some shyness on her face.
Suddenly her phone vibrates. She took it out of her purse and looked at it. Her wallet fell on the table. Suddenly I see this look on her. Kind of like that look you get when your life almost flashes before your eyes.
"I have to go", Brittney said as she quickly stood up and grabbed her purse. "Can you pay for this, I really have to go. I can give you the money when I see you again."
She had so much panic on her face that I knew something was wrong. I was so confused that I even forgot her wallet was sitting there on the table.
"Everything okay?", he asked with concern.
"I have to go", Brittney said before walking out of the restaurant.
I sat there in confusion. I eventually realized that she left my wallet. I grabbed it and rushed outside. Before the door closed behind me, I saw her driving past me. The speed of the car increased by the second.
"Sir?", a voice said suddenly.
I turned around. It was one of the workers.
"You have to pay", the worker said.
"Yea. I am. The girl I was with left her wallet. I was trying to get to her in time back she's gone", I said as he walked back into the restaurant with the worker. "My apologies."
"It's okay man", said the worker. "Long as you aren't trying to run out on us."
"No. None of that", said I as I took my wallet out.
I give him my card and pay for the meal. Once he gives me my card back and I walk back to the bar.
Once I get inside, I make my way to the bartender Kate. I've known her since I moved here. She owns the place.
I sit down and call her over. "Kate", I called.
Kate walked over to me.
"What's up?", she asked as she leaned on the bar counter.
"What do you know about Brittney?", I ask.
"Well...that depends on what you know", she replied.
I put Brittney's wallet on the counter.
"She left her wallet. I was wondering if you thought it was best you return it or if I did", I say.
Kate looks at the wallet.
"I think it's best if I do. She's married so I don't want her to look bad", said Kate.
"Look bad from his perspective? Or look bad physically?", I asked.
Kate didn't say anything. She looked more so shocked that I said that.
"...has he hit her before? Yes. You didn't hear that from me but yes. But...I don't know if he's changing or what. She stays with him..she seems like she's doing better but I don't know. And I don't wanna take any chances if you go up there yourself", said Kate. "She doesn't deserve that. And quite frankly I'm glad you took her next door. She deserved that."
"Why not help her get out of that situation?", I asked.
"I don't know her well enough to tell her what to do. We aren't that close", said Kate.
"...we weren't that close when you helped me find a space for my law firm", I said.
"That's different. If I talk her into divorcing that man and things go south then he's not the only one with blood on his hands because I told her to do it", said Kate.
"...when you put it like that then I can understand", I said.
"I don't have anywhere for her to go. I stay with my mother. She has a child that she will not be able to take care of alone until she builds herself up. I can't help with the consequences.", said Kate.
"Just please get that to her", I said. "I'll come back tomorrow to pay my tab. Money is a little short right now since I'm starting things up on my own."
"Alright", said Kate. "Have a good night"
"You too", I said as I stood up and left.
