BRITTNEY POV.
I try to unlock the door to our house but it was already unlocked. I walk in taking a deep breath to prepare for what make come next.
I see my husband walk from the kitchen with his shirt off. His body was perfect, but his facial expression read confusion or anger.
"Where's Grayson?", Carter asked.
MEET CARTER⚜️
I freeze for a moment, forgetting that I should've picked him up from my mom's house.
"With my mother", I said as I look him in the eyes.
"Why is he there? That's your responsibility. Where have you been?", he asked.
"Carter, I was with my mother. I thought I texted you that", I said as I unlock my phone.
Carter continues to look at me.
"It's late", he said.
"I know. I fell asleep. I didn't want to wake Grayson so I just came here. I haven't seen you all week", I said with some fear in my voice.
"You lying to me?", he asked as he read my emotions.
He was so calm. He was always so calm. That's why I can never predict what he'd do next.
"Britt, sometimes you make it so hard to love you when I know you're lying", said Carter.
I make it hard for you to love me? Wow. You should really be in my shoes, I thought to myself.
"I'm going to ask you one more time. Where were you?", he asked.
"I was at the bar", I said.
Carter sighed as he looked to the side. He looked like he was annoyed. Annoyed with me.
"Damn Britt, I just can't with you. You lie too damn much", said Carter. "You used to be truthful with me"
"...Carter you didn't use to hit on me either", I said.
"You bringing up my mistakes now? You tryna turn this on me?", he asked.
"No, I was just saying that—"
"Shut the fuck up", said Carter in a demanding voice.
I stopped talking and listened.
"What the fuck are you doing at the bar? Tryna get hit on or something? You with some other guy? What? I ain't good enough for you. Matter of fact, didnt I tell you not to go there anymore?", he asked as he got closer.
I begin to brace myself as he got closer. "I was talking to Kate", I said.
"You don't need to be talking to no fucking body!", he shouted. "The people you need to talk to are me and our son!"
My heart rate begins to speed up.
"I'm sorry. I got lonely", I said.
Suddenly the doorbell rings.
"Move out of the way", he said.
Carter walks past me as I take a step to the side. Carter opens the door and there's Kate standing there.
"Hey", said Kate. "Is Brittney here? I have something to give her."
"I'll give it to her", Carter replied.
"I have to tell her something anyway so—"
"She can't talk right now. She's busy. I'll give it to her", said Carter.
"Okay", said Kate as she gave Carter my wallet.
Carter looks at my wallet. "Her wallet... with all of her— I mean my money. Thank you", said Carter.
Kate looks down and then back at Carter. "Have a good night", she said with sadness in her voice.
"Yea. You too", said Carter.
Carter shuts the door and turns around to look at me.
"You're fucking careless", said Carter. "I be nice and let you hold a couple of my credit cards and stop giving you an allowance and you do some shit like this? You're fucking stupid"
"It was an accident", I said.
"Accident, on purpose, I don't care. It happened.", he said before putting my wallet in his back pocket.
"Just go ahead, do it", I said softly.
"At least you know", he said before he hit me.
I back up a little without falling. I touch my cheek as it throbs.
He grabs my neck and now my feet are barely touching the ground.
"This is why I tell your ass to stay in the house. You out here drinking and getting a damn beer belly and shit", he said as he threw me down.
I gasp for air as I lay on the ground.
"I got our son because you wanna abandon him for some drinks. He's upstairs and sleeping. I told him how you don't wanna watch him. You rather leave him alone", said Carter.
I became angry because I love my son. I take care of him every day. Day in and out. So for him to feed my son those lies were ridiculous.
"Why would you tell him that?", I asked.
"You questioning me?", he asked.
"That isn't true!", I shouted as I held my tears back. "I love him. He knows I love. I tell him that everyday. Why would you tell him that?"
"How about you just shut up while you're ahead", he replied.
I stood up and ball my fist. I didn't plan on hitting Carter but I wanted to.
"You tough?", he asked with a smirk on his face as he looks at my fists. "You ain't tough. Go upstairs and go to sleep. What the fuck you doing out so late anyway?"
"It's only 11 o'clock", I said.
"Why are you still talking?", he asked with annoyance. "Go upstairs."
I just forget the conversation and walk upstairs. I was so heated. The hitting, is something I've gotten used to. I've been dealing with it for long enough. But him putting lies into my son's head was a different story.
———
The next morning, I woke up my 6 year old son, Grayson, calling me.
"Mommy", he said.
I open my eyes and see him carrying a tray with a meal on it.
"Daddy made you breakfast", said Grayson. "I told a sausage."
I smiled. Grayson is my heart and soul.
"I'll give you anything anyway, honey. You know that", I said.
"Mommy? What's on your cheek?", he asked.
I touch my cheeks and the spot that Carter hit felt painful.
"Nothing honey", I said as I sat up. "Thank you for bringing my breakfast.
"You're welcome", said Grayson.
Carter walks into the room with flowers and a gift bag. The usual routine. Sometimes it's something as small as breakfast in bed or a new piece of jewelry. The last time he hit me was so bad that he brought me a new car.
It's a reoccurring loop that I can't seem to get myself out of. But I will one day. Right?
