Tuesday afternoon, I drove over to the school. Class for people with a regular schedule just ended, but there was supposed to be a Drama cast meeting. Mrs. Sings said that we would be receiving our scripts highlighted with all of our parts. I was hoping to get a relatively big roll; at least one with some solos. After Connor said he liked my singing, I had felt much more confident in my singing ability. It was like his kind words were the things I had needed to get off my ass and do it.
I walked into the auditorium, seeing everyone already seated in a chair in the circle. I smiled at everyone, who surprisingly smiled back, and found a seat next to someone I don't know yet. He turned to see me with a wide smile and said, "Hi, my name is Ben!"
I give him a smile in return, although I am sure it didn't look very convincing. I was getting super nervous because it wasn't often that someone wanted to talk to me. "Troye," I said, getting super flustered.
Ben couldn't have been in the same class as me. He was at least a junior that was for certain. Why was I scared of him, if I was older, therefore wiser? The only answer I could come up with for my own question was that he was happy, confident, and proud of himself, whereas I was still learning to be all of those things. "How are you?" He asked.
I took a deep breath and told myself, You need to do this. This will help you get over yourself. So I shook my head quickly to clear the nerves and responded to his question with a huge smile. "Good! How about you?"
"Couldn't have been better," He said back almost instantly. He smiled, just as Mrs. Sings came in with a hand full of envelope.
Mrs. Sings got one of the drama-veterans to hand out those envelopes to each person. Every single one of them had a different person's name on them, and they were to be delivered to said person. The kid came around with each of our envelopes and eventually handed me one. I thanked him and looked down at the item.
My name was written neatly at the top, but I was scared to open it. I wanted to get a good part, and that piece of paper was the only thing that was between me and achieving such a goal.
I stared at it for so long that it must've looked abnormal because eventually I heard Ben laugh. His laugh broke my gaze, bringing me back to reality. "You can open that, you know? It won't envelope you," He said with a dry laugh at the end.
I couldn't help it; something about Ben's awful pun broke a laugh out of me. "Okay, okay," I said, seeing Ben out of the corner of my eye looking prideful at breaking my nerves. I took a deep breath, flipped the envelope over, and started ripping at the paper. Cool Fact: I suck at opening envelops.
I was interrupted by my phone dinging. I sighed, and looked over to see who it was. I read the text from Tyler that said,
"Hey love! Korey just came over, so if you want to see him, just pop by after drama, okay?"
I rolled my eyes at his bad-timed text, and quickly responded with a 'sure'. I put my phone down, and got back to my paper. I brought it out and flipped it over, seeing my name at the top of the play script. Underneath it said that I was going to be playing the role of the Prince. I suddenly broke out into a smile and squealed a bit. It was a tad cliché for me to get the male lead, but it is not like I got it without working hard at it. Those years and years of acting class definitely put themselves to use in that moment.
I flipped through the script, locating all of my lines. I actually had very few, resulting in little stage time. For the most of Act 1, the scene was at Cinderella's farm, so I didn't have any lines then. I was in Act 2 and Act 3, but looking through all of the lines; it was actually quite odd how under-developed the character of Prince Charming was.
