Tara smiled anxiously as her eyes scanned the room filled with her friends and acquaintances. "As I think most of you know, our little band is officially going on tour."
The partygoers cheered.
"Thank you," she said sweetly. "But before we leave for our first stop in Germany, there's something I need to do."
Charlie looked on in wonder as Jeff handed him one of the beers he had fetched from the kitchen. "What's she doing?"
"Fuck if I know," Jeff replied as he cracked open his beer and took a long swig.
"Darcy Olsson," Tara said, drawing every eye in the room to her girlfriend, who was still standing next to Nick. "Some apologies, but you do like a spectacle."
Darcy released a nervous bout of laughter. "Uh, what's happening right now?"
"I want you to reach into the secret pocket you always forget about in the shirt you're wearing right now," Tara instructed, taking advantage of Darcy's scattered brain when it came to her own belongings.
Everyone watched expectantly as Darcy padded herself down and pulled out a small object hidden in her clothing. Later on, Nick would share what Darcy had uncovered. From within her baggy shirt, she found a small, square box. When she opened it, she found a note and a ring. The note read;
I love you more than I could ever hope to express. Darcy, my one and only, please marry me. If the answer is 'no,' then pretend I got you some earnings. No pressure...please say yes!! <3
Tears welled in Darcy's eyes as she looked up from her engagement ring to lock her gaze with Tara's.
"What's inside?" Tara wondered tentatively.
Darcy sniffled and laughed. "Not fuckin' earnings, that's for sure." Her cheeks were rosy as she smiled as widely as her face would allow. Silently, she mouthed to Tara, "ask me."
"Will you marry me?" Tara asked aloud, sending waves of whispers through the room.
Charlie felt as though everyone in that room were collectively holding their breath for Darcy's answer.
"Of course, I will," Darcy sobbed with joy as Tara crossed the room and swept her up in her arms. With happy tears, they shared a deep kiss. When they remembered that they were in a room of people, holding their full attention, the two women laughed and held their entwined hands in the air triumphantly.
"She said yes!" Tara proclaimed before kissing her fiancé once more.
"What would you have done if I said earnings?" Darcy laughed.
Tara chuckled to herself. "I didn't really plan that far."
Charlie clapped and cheered along with the rest of the party guests. He was incredibly happy for Darcy and Tara. They'd been in love for so long, yet they seemed stronger than ever. Now they would officially vow to spend their entire lives together. Though, it wasn't like they weren't already doing that. The wedding was the celebration of what they'd had for years and what they would have for years to come. The wedding was the milestone where they would make that promise, one they had subconsciously made way back when they were sixteen.
I want that, Charlie thought. He smiled to himself as he watched them hang off of each other, nuzzling and pecking as they showed Darcy's ring off to anyone that wanted to see it.
His blue eyes gravitated back over to where Darcy was standing earlier. Nick stood alone, smiling when he noticed Charlie.
I have that, he realized. I already have everything I need.
A couple of hours later, Charlie and Nick took a leisurely walk home. They only lived a couple of blocks from Tara and Darcy, so there was no need to order a ride.
"They seem really happy," Charlie said about the newly engaged couple.
"Yeah," Nick agreed warmly, taking Charlie's hand into his as they continued down the empty street. "They've always been great together."
Like us?
"Hey, um," Nick started, worried that he would sound nosey when he changed the subject. "What did Tara wanna talk to you about earlier?"
