For New Year's Eve, Nick and Charlie had some of their friends over for a small party. They brought out all of their various game consoles for their guests, hoping to hit a nerve of nostalgia since they were ringing in the new year.

By 11:45 p.m. the group was gathered in the living room watching Darcy, Tao, Elle, and Oliver play Mario Kart. Tara spent most of her time by the stereo procuring the night's music from her phone so she could dance. Staring at her phone, Tara noticed the time.

“Fifteen minutes!” she announced as she sat on the coach’s armrest next to her fiancé. She pecked the top of Darcy's head, distracting her enough to crash her car in the game, spinning away from the track. In a matter of milliseconds, the other players passed her, leaving Darcy in the dust.

With an annoyed growl, she set down the controller. Then, she turned to Tara, said, “fuck the game,” and pulled her fiancé off of the armrest to sit in her lap. Wrapping her arms around Tara, Darcy snuggled close and kissed her lips.

In preparation for midnight, Nick and Charlie poured champagne for their friends to toast with. Using a tray, they ushered the drinks into the living room, serving their guests like waiters.

“Ooh, I’m gonna win,” Tao said in surprise as his car passed both Elle and Oliver.

“You wish,” Oliver challenged playfully as he sent a shell from his car to knock Tao out of first place. Instead of hitting Tao's car, it hit Elle's, causing her car to comically spin to a stop.

Tao snickered mischievously and told Elle, “sorry, love. It’s just how the game goes.”

“Pft,” Elle scoffed before she placed her hand over Tao's eyes so he couldn’t see where he was driving. “Really? That's how the game goes?”

As Oliver passed Tao, then the finish line, he stood with his arms raised in triumph. “I am victorious!”

Elle chuckled as she removed her hand from her partner's eyes.

“Rematch,” Tao demanded before mock-glaring at Elle. “Fair this time.”

“Five minutes,” Tara reminded them in a sing-song tone, still comfortable in Darcy’s lap.

Darcy whispered something to her, prompting Tara to giggle and give her lover a deep kiss.

“Ladies,” Nick interrupted, offering them both a flute of champagne.

Darcy straightened up as she took her flute. “Fancy.”

“Thank you, Nick,” Tara said pleasantly.

When everyone had a drink, it was nearly midnight.

“To a kinda shit, kinda awesome year!” Darcy proclaimed.

“I'll drink to that,” Oliver chimed.

With six seconds to midnight, the group began to count down, ready to put the year behind them.

“Six.”

Charlie stood next to Nick and smiled, unbelievably grateful that he had such a wonderful person in his life.

“Five.”

With a smile so wide it hurt his face, Nick pulled Charlie closer so he could drape an arm around Charlie's shoulders.

“Four.”

Tao turned to Elle and made a silly face, causing her to laugh. She kissed his cheek and linked her arm with his.

“Three.”

Tara and Darcy were now on their feel, both with an arm around the other.

“Two.”

Feeling pretty single and a little lonely, Oliver took a swig of champagne.

“One. Happy New Year!” they all shouted.

Each couple shared a New Years kiss while Oliver playfully hugged himself.

“I love you,” Nick told Charlie.

“I love you, too,” Charlie grinned. Truer words had never been spoken.

Nick kissed him once more, then held him in a tight hug.

When Charlie pulled away, he looked at his fiancé dead in the eye. “I was thinking. About us.”

“Should I be worried?” Nick tried to laugh anxiously.

Charlie calmly shook his head. “The first romantic memory I have of us was that day in the snow. I think I’d like to get married in the winter; it feels more…us.”

Nick could barely contain his joy. “I would love that.”

Charlie nodded in an official manner. “Winter then. Maybe early December or late November. The winter after next?”

Nick’s face was flushing from the amount of glee stirring in his chest. “Are we setting a date, then?”

Charlie met him with a kind smile. “I think we just did.”
