Monday arrived after an eventful weekend.
Despite the looming exams marking the last week of the month, two individuals were facing a different kind of challenge—one they were hesitant to acknowledge yet impossible to ignore.
As fate would have it, they were walking toward their classroom from opposite directions, and when their paths finally crossed at the entrance of the building, their faces instinctively flushed.
One second of eye contact, and it felt as if the world tilted beneath their feet. Their hearts pounded, hands fidgeting as they struggled to maintain their composure.
Mark was the first to break the tension, offering a small, somewhat awkward smile.
Side by side, they ascended the stairs to the third floor, where their first class awaited them.
The hallway was bustling with students, making it impossible for them to be alone in their thoughts. When Danielle nearly collided with another student, Mark instinctively reached out, his hand wrapping around her wrist as he gently pulled her back toward him.
A perfectly normal action for someone as considerate as Mark, yet Danielle couldn't ignore the weight of it. Not after his confession on the night of her birthday.
Mark wasn't just looking out for her.
Mark wasn't just being kind.
He cared—because he liked her.
Trailing just half a step behind, Mark ensured she remained within his line of sight, a silent protector in the sea of students. As they entered the third-floor hallway, he finally walked beside her.
People greeted him as they passed, nods of acknowledgment given without hesitation. He carried his position as student council president with effortless authority, his mere presence commanding respect.
Danielle admired him. He was the kind of person anyone would feel proud to stand beside.
If she weren't so caught up in her own flustered thoughts, she would have teased him about looking so serious. Because truthfully, Mark looked good when he was serious—dominating, confident, in control.
Not a single word was spoken between them from the building entrance to their classroom, yet the silence held weight, something unspoken lingering between them.
It felt like they had reverted back to their usual dynamic.
Only this time, their hearts were beating in sync—for each other.
"You go first."
"No, you."
"It's fine, really—"
"Elle, just go."
With a sigh, Danielle finally relented, pressing the button on the vending machine to purchase a cola. The cold beverage was a welcome relief against the heat of the day, and she let out a contented sigh after taking the first sip.
The sun was relentless, and the only reprieve was the air-conditioned classrooms and refreshing drinks.
As she finished her cola, she turned to buy a bottle of water, only to realize she had no more change left.
