Somewhere Only We Know

Chapter 12

The only sound in the room came from my oxygen. Thankfully I was released from the hospital after a couple of days. Mom was now making me take it super easy. I lay in bed all day.

I got a doctor's note to stay out of school for the next few months. I only interact with Luke and my mom daily. I have to be even more careful about getting sick. A mild illness could land me back in the hospital, which is not what I want.

When Luke's at school, I'm alone. Mom tries to work when Luke is with me, but it hasn't worked out that way. 

I've lost a lot of motivation to do most things. Showering, eating, getting dressed, schoolwork. All of it feels like a huge chore. I want to feel like myself again. 

Music has been my only escape from reality lately. I put my earbuds in and listened to music for hours.

"Marie?"

I jumped when I heard Luke's voice. I didn't even hear him come home. After pulling my earbuds out, I turned to him.

"Oh hey, I didn't hear you come home."

He laughed and shook his head before ruffling my hair.

"You're going to go deaf with that music."

I shrugged. "Eh."

He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.

"How was school?" I asked.

"Eh, it was okay. I flunked my math test."

"I've never been good at math either."

He laughed and laid down next to me, pulling me to lay against his chest. He started to play with my hair, humming quietly.

"I missed you today," I said.

"I missed you too. What did you do today?" Luke asked, turning my head to look at him.

"Nothing." I sighed.

Luke frowned. "I know this sucks. But you're going to get through this." I shrugged. I've heard people tell me this a thousand times. It doesn't make it suck any less. 

"Yeah yeah, I know."

"Marie, I mean it. I'm going to be right by your side through this."

I smiled sadly at him. 

"Thank you."

"You don't have to thank me. That's what boyfriends are for."

I leaned up and kissed him. He smiled and cupped my cheek, kissing me back softly before we pulled apart.

"Now, will you please go shower, and I will make you something to eat since I know you haven't moved from this bed at all today." 

I laughed and nodded, slowly getting up. 

After I showered and changed into sweats, I made my way downstairs, where Luke was. He was dancing around to music as he cooked. I stayed quiet, watching him in amusement. When he finally turned around, he jumped slightly.

"How long have you been standing there?" He asked, turning the music off.

I laughed. "Long enough to see some of your moves."

He laughed, setting two plates of food down on the table. I made my way to the table, where Luke pulled my chair out for me. After thanking him, I sat down. Luke made us both mac n cheese, which looked promising.

Both of us ate, and Luke then washed the dishes. After he was done, we settled on the couch together to watch a movie. I'm unsure how far into the movie we got because my eyes closed quickly after it started.
