The banging continued to get louder and louder while I tried to think of a way to get out of the cinema without the lady noticing us.
I thought and thought about what to do but came up with nothing. I looked over at my father, seeking help. Unfortunately, all he did was shrug his shoulders and put on an I-dunno kind of look.
That really wasn’t like him. He’d never just sit back and relax while I did all the work and he definitely would not let me put myself in danger. But I didn’t have time for thinking about him because I had to find a way to get us out of there, quickly.
I was panicking and freaking out when my father whispered, “Dionne, what’s that over there?”
I turned around to face where my father was pointing at and stared at it for a moment. It was just part of the wall. What was so special about that?
“What about it?” I asked, sounding very confused.
“Look closely.” he said as he stood up.
We both walked over to the wall and examined it carefully. My father was right. There was something different about the wall.
Just then, my father pointed out lines on the wall. It looked like some sort of small door. I could only wonder where it lead to.
There was something about it that was just so intriguing to me. Besides, at that point in time there wasn’t really anything else that I could do, but try.
Just then my father tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a small pocket knife. I took it from him and stared at it for a moment. It was sharp, pointy and very shiny. I flipped it over in my hands and noticed something very peculiar about it. There was a letter M engraved on it in cursive.
Where had he gotten it from? He never carried anything but mints and his car keys around with him.
But, I didn’t have time to think about frivolous things like that. So, I looked at him and smiled, before reaching over and tracing over the lines with the knife and pulling the piece open.
I looked at my father and smiled. There was a tunnel down there.
This might be our only way out. I thought to myself.
I leaned in forward and had a glance around the tunnel. It was just then when I felt a strong push on my back, forcing me into the tunnel. I fell forward and landed on my hands and knees.
“Dad?” I asked him, as I saw him grin and shut the door behind me. “Dad!”
I banged and pushed on the door but it was no use. I couldn’t get it open!
Why did my dad lock me in here? I thought to myself, tears swelling up in my eyes.
I started to panic. Where did this tunnel lead to?
It was dark and damp down there and I could feel a cool breeze on my neck. It almost felt like there was someone standing behind me.
I turned around as fast as I could and, to my surprise, saw nothing. Then again, I could hardly see anything at all.
I walked forward slowly, wondering what to do. I was lost.
I started to think of an explanation for why my father had locked me up in here for. I thought and thought, as I walked and walked down the tunnel. Then it finally hit me.
I remembered all of the things that my dad had done when I’d found him. The way that he magically appeared after being trapped in the cinema. All of the times that he sat back and let me put myself at risk. The way that he discovered the lines on the wall when he had barely looked at it. The way he’d violently pushed me into the tunnel. There was only one logical explanation for his actions.
He wasn’t my father.
