“Oh, goodie!” she said with delight.
"You have exactly two days to find them. But beware, young one. There are things in this house that will prevent you from finding them.” She warned me and then let out a loud laugh.
I nodded my head and turned to leave the room, but stopped when I realized something.
“Wait, where do I start looking?” I asked, turning back but there was no one there to answer my question. I waited for a moment, and then opened the door and left the room.
Alright, I thought to myself. Where do I go first?
There were five floors in the house, I knew because I had seen the house plan weeks before. I decided to start on floor one and work my way up. Five floors, fourteen rooms, only forty-eight hours.
I can make it, I thought.
I headed down the stairs and reached the hallway of the first floor. I guess that it was around 12:57p.m at that time because it was pitch-black outside.
I walked down the hallway until I got to the first room, the kitchen.
I was really unsure about going in. I had no idea what could be in there. Hesitantly, I pushed the heavy wooden door open and walked into the big warm kitchen.
The walls were painted a light brown color, and they were lined with cupboards and shelves. I walked over to one of the cupboards and opened their small doors to see what was hidden inside of them. Unfortunately, I found nothing except for a few cobwebs and a lot of dust. It was only when I saw that the cupboards were empty that I realized how hungry I really was. All I had eaten was a slice of bread in the morning and a biscuit on the way here.
I sighed and closed the cupboard doors. There was no time to find food.
I moved on, searching for any clues that could help me find them.
Where had she hidden them? I wondered. But after searching each cupboard and looking in all the possible places, I hadn’t found anything.
Clearly, no one was there. I checked the time on my watch. It was 1:04. I felt like a failure because in those seven precious minutes, I had found absolutely nothing. Even though I was hungry and tired, I decided to leave the room and move on. I didn’t have any time to waste.
Next was the dining room, a spacious, nicely furnished area with a large table in the center of it. I moved towards the center of the room, looking for clues everywhere I could. I couldn’t see anything that would help me find my family.
I walked up and down the room, staring at the same dark wall the whole time. There was something strange about it. I walked over to the wall and stroked my hand across it. Dust rubbed off on my fingertips and made them a dark gray color.
At first, I didn’t realize anything different about the wall but when I took a closer look at it I discovered something very important. There was something written on the wall. I wiped away all the dust to read what it said underneath.
You seek the one who cares for the ill both day and night.
Pass through the gateway to your dreams.
What on earth was that supposed to mean?
“The one who cares for the ill both day and night,” I murmured, trying to figure it out.
That must be someone who heals the ill. A doctor or… a nurse! My mother is a nurse. So I should be able to find my mother in my bedroom?
I decided to have a look in my bedroom. The only problem was that at that point, I had no idea where it was. I frowned slightly, standing there as I thought. But it didn’t take long for me to remember the room I was in earlier, the one that I had seen the lady in.
Once I had reached the bedroom, I pushed the door open and walked in. It was around 1:20 so I could see the bedroom better than I could before. I walked around, just as I had done in the other two rooms.
Nothing caught my eye, until I spotted a large mirror on the dressing table in the far left corner of the room. I walked over to it and sat down on the little stool in front of it. I sat still for a few seconds, staring at myself in the mirror. I looked dreadful.
I had dark circles under my eyes and a big bruise on my forehead from when I had fell earlier. After examining the scars on my face, I froze and stared at myself in the mirror, looking myself directly in the eyes. Something strange was going on. My reflection was moving, but I wasn’t.
