Who Is This Chapter Dedicated To?-My Family for being so supportive! Thankyou So Much!
Just by chance, I came across a website for an old newspaper called “monstres hebdomadaire”. The words sounded familiar but I couldn’t quite remember where I’d heard them. That’s when I remembered my French class and what we’d been learning a few weeks before. We’d been learning new vocabulary and studying holidays, one of them happened to be Halloween.
I immediately remembered the words and their meanings in English. The newspaper was called “Monsters Weekly”. Does that even make sense? I thought to myself. I was puzzled, and slightly hesitant, but eventually ended-up scrolling down and reading more. What I saw was not at all what I was expecting to find, but was exactly what I needed to make my parents decide to stay right here, in London.
The newspaper was filled with stories about missing people, thefts and other crimes that were going on around Lovelake several years ago. This frightened me a little but these events had happened a long time ago, it may not be the same there anymore. At least that’s what I thought, before I read the rest of the article. Apparently, the writers of this newspaper thought that humans may not have been the ones responsible for these crimes. But that’s just what they thought, they were probably wrong anyway. Besides, if humans weren’t responsible for the things going on there, who or what was?
Although I knew that the things the article said were most likely false, I couldn’t help feeling slightly disturbed and nervous about moving to Lovelake. Plus, this was the only proof I had that could change my parents’ minds about moving to that horrible place.
I collected all of the information I needed and then rushed downstairs to tell my parents everything I had found out, but when I arrived at the bottom of the stairs they were comfortably huddled around our coffee table with Jack.
“What are you doing, guys?” I asked, feeling very puzzled.
“Oh, darling! We were just showing Jack our new house.” my mum said sounding happier then ever.
I walked over to where they were sitting and peered over Jack’s shoulder to sneak-a-peek at the house.
I was amazed at the beauty and elegance of the little house. It was the perfect little family home with four bedrooms, a kitchen and a spacious living room. As I looked through the photos and at my parents’ faces, I realized that moving to Lovelake might not be that bad after all. That’s when I decided not to tell anyone about the things that were going on in Lovelake. Moving made my family happy and I wouldn’t risk their happiness for anything in the world. Even if it meant I would never see my friends or school again.
"Did you need something, dear?" my mum asked.
"Um..well..." I said biting my tongue.
"Yes.." my mum said, encouraging me to talk.
"I-I just wanted to tell you about how excited I am to move to Lovelake." I said. As I spoke, I felt my heart break into pieces inside of my chest.
"Splendid!" she said as she gave me a big hug, "We're really happy to hear that you are finally ready to move!"
"Me too." I said as she let go of me. I smiled a fake I-am-so-happy-I-could-cry smile and threw myself onto the big sofa behind me.
That's it. I thought to myself. That was the last chance I had to try and convince my parents to stay here.
That night I was tucked up in bed, almost about to shut my eyes and fall asleep, when my best friend Lauren rang me.
"Ding-ding! Ding-ding!"
I jumped up in surprise and answered my phone before my whole family woke up.
"Lauren! It's eleven o'clock at night! I was just about to go to bed-" I whispered angrily at her, but before I could finish she interrupted me.
"Dionne, calm down! I think I've found a way to make your parents change their minds about leaving."
To be honest, I had almost completely lost hope of ever changing their desicion, but when Lauren rang I felt a little flicker of hope light inside of me. I geuss I was a little bit pestimistic about the whole thing then but what did I have to lose?
"I'm listening." I said intrigued to hear what she had to say.
I listened to her entire plan carefully, taking notes on everything she said. I thought long and hard about her ideas. It was a rather unusual plan. I was so puzzled about what to do, what path to take, what door to open. Lauren sounded so sure about her plan that I decided there was only one desicion I could make.
"Alright, we'll do it tomorrow when my parents, Jack and I have our farewell party at school."
"Okay, see you tomorrow." she said.
"Yes, see you tomorrow." I replied, with a little sound of hope in my voice, and hung up the phone.
I had done it. I had agreed to ruin everything that my parents had been planning for. I had a long think to myself about what to do. Was I really a horrible person? My intention was not to destroy their plans but to show them that life there was not what they would expect it to be.
That's when I realised something very important to our plan that I had forgotten. If I just told them that moving to Lovelake was a bad idea, they would think that I was just making excuses to stay in London...but if I had facts and evidence to back my theory up, they would have no choice but to agree with me!
But where would I find evidence? I pulled out my laptop and logged on to the internet. I was about to find something to make us stay here, forever.
I didn't realise at that point that I was making a huge mistake. Lovelake was not at all what we thought it would be like and not even the internet could predict the things that would happen there.
