I tilted my head slightly to the left, but my reflection didn’t move. It only sat there, staring back at me, motionless. This was creepy. Why wasn’t it moving? I didn’t understand it.
I sat up straight again and remained silent, sitting still for a few seconds. Then I tilted my head to the right and waited for my reflection’s reaction. My reflection still remained unmoving and as silent as ever. My brows furrowed in confusion as I stared at the girl in the mirror, who was me.
Suddenly, my reflection smiled at me. Even though she was smiling, it seemed disingenuous. With a quick move of her hand, she waved at me. It seemed like she was waving goodbye.
I was puzzled. Why did my reflection wave at me? Wait, a better question is, how did she wave at me? She was my reflection.
At that moment, she disappeared.
Alright, that was creepy.I thought to myself.
I pushed the stool back a bit and got off gently. I needed to find my mother.
I stood in front of the mirror for a few seconds, with no reflection. I was about to turn around when I saw something, someone, in the mirror.
It was my mother.
I stared at her for a few minutes. Tears were streaming down her face, her eyes swollen and red. Her hair was a mess, tangled and dirty. Her clothes were ripped and stained. The sight of her like that broke my heart into a thousand pieces, inside of my chest.
“Mum,” I croaked. “I-I’m going to get you out of there.”
Unfortunately, I thought that that was a promise I was going to have to break.
She opened her mouth and tried to say something. I couldn’t hear her but watched as her lips formed two words.
Be Careful.
Oh my gondola!
How on earth was I supposed to get her out of there? I decided that the only way I could do this was by breaking the mirror. And before you start screaming at me, and try to warn me, I know. Breaking a mirror is seven years of bad luck. Still, I think that whatever terrors life throws at me, it can’t be worse than this.
What can I break it with?
I looked around the room, trying to decide what would work. Finally, I decided to use anything that I could find. So I picked up the first thing that I saw. A chair.Yeah.
I grabbed it and shoved it hard against the mirror, one, two, three times.
The mirror didn’t break.
I tried so many different things. The chair, a short stool, and even a small wooden table.
The mirror still didn’t break.
Oh, great.I thought to myself. I started to feel disappointed, ashamed even, of myself. How was I supposed to get her out of there? This situation was becoming more frustrating by the moment as I stared at the mirror.
Without thinking it out properly, I pulled the mirror off of the dressing table and smashed it on the floor with all of my might.

“What if she does find them all?” an anxious voice asked.
“She won’t. I assure you, if she gets close enough to finding her whole family, I’ll make sure she never sees them again.” The lady wearing the long black dress spoke, trying her best to reassure her companion.
“See to it that she doesn’t, or I’ll make sure you never see daylight again. Do you understand?” The voice threatened in a harsh tone.
The lady gulped and then answered, “Yes. I understand.”
“Leave immediately and don’t bother me until you have further news of the girl and her family. Go!”
The lady turned around. Her palms were sweaty and she felt sick with worry and anxiety. What if the girl did find her family? This would be a big problem, a big dent in their plan. She knew that if this happened, she would never be forgiven. But it wouldn’t matter because she wouldn’t be alive long enough to apologize.
She left the large room and entered the long, dark hallway. She didn’t bother to turn on the lights. She didn’t want Dionne to see that she was there. She walked down the corridor, making sure that the heels of her shoes didn’t make clicking noises on the cold tile floor. The last thing she needed was Dionne seeing her, snooping around the house and spying on her. It was just then she heard a large crashing sound on the ground on the floor above her.
What on earth was she doing? The lady thought to herself. She definitely couldn’t afford letting her find a family member of her family.
She pondered to herself, still trying to figure out what the source of the sound could be. What could have made the noise? Had the girl freaked out and gone mental, or had she broken something on purpose? Surely it wasn’t anything that could help her find her family?
She thought for a few seconds and reviewed the sound again and again in her head.
The mirror!
Oh, no!She thought. This couldn’t be happening.
The foolish girl had taken the mirror and broken it into a million pieces.
