It was pitch black outside by the time I had woken up after banging my head, and knocking myself unconscious. I was frightened and had no idea where I was anymore.
Slowly, I tried to pick myself off the ground. It was hard and every muscle in my body hurt, but eventually I managed to get up. I thought for a moment and planned my next actions out in my head. I turned around and used my hands to search the wall for a light switch.
A few minutes later, I found a switch. I flipped it up and a pale, flickering light turned on. It didn’t light the whole corridor but at least I could see where I was walking now. Hesitantly, I walked over to the bathroom. I pulled the door open slightly and peered through the gap. There was nothing there.
Good. I thought.
I was really not in the mood for being mentally-tortured right now.
After I had made sure that no one was there, I closed the door and moved towards a room that must have been a bedroom. Forgetting the fact that I might have been walking straight into a trap, I walked straight through the doorway into the unlit room. I looked around at my surroundings.
From what I could see, it was nicely furnished and decorated. There was a dressing table in the left corner of the room along with several shelves and closets around. After I had looked around for a while, I started to wonder if the room was meant to be mine. It was exactly my style and was filled with all of my favorite things: clothes, jewelry, and magazines.
I was so fascinated in the bedroom that I became completely distracted and forgot all about the situation I was in. Just then, I heard the floorboards creak. I turned around, heart pounding. There was someone else in my house.
And it wasn't a member of my family.
I could feel the adrenaline rush inside of me. What was I going to do? Then a thought occurred. What if this person knew where my family was?
I guess I was going to find out.
The door to the bedroom was closed and I walked over to I lean against it, pressing my ear down on the wood. I could hear someone or something, breathing on the other side of the door. I didn’t know what to do next so I guess I was just going to “wing it”.
I mean, I was alone in a house with a creepy and mysterious being. What did I have to lose?
I decided that on the count of three I’d open the door and see who, or what was outside.
One… I thought. Two….
“Three,” I finally whispered.
At that moment I pulled the door open but to my surprise no one was there. What was weird though was that I could still hear someone breathing, and it wasn’t me.
“Looking for someone?” a voice said, coming from behind me.
I jumped up in shock and whirled around to face the owner of the voice.
There was a pale lady wearing a long dress standing in the corner of the bedroom. How did she get there? She was definitely not there before.
“Wh-who are you?” I stuttered in a frightened voice.
“Well that’s rude. I mean, you could be a bit more polite! You are in my house, you know.”
Excuse me, her house?
“What do you want from me?” I asked her.
“I think it’s what you want from me that is important.”
My eyes narrowed. “I don’t want anything from you.” I snapped to her in a harsh tone.
She shook her head slowly from side-to-side and looked at me, her eyes wide open.
“Well, I guess you don’t want to know where your family is then,” she said in an, oh-well-your-loss kind of way. I leaned in closer, wanting her to finish what she had to say.
“Where are they?” I asked after a moment.
“I’ve hidden them,” she said with a smile.
“Where?” I asked, my voice rising, becoming more frustrated by the second.
“You want to find them, do you?” she asked.
I nodded my head.
“Well, how about we play a little game of hide-and-seek then? I’ve hidden each member of your family in a room in this house. If you can find them, you may all leave and go home. However, if you don’t find them all by tomorrow by midnight, I get to keep each of you here…forever.”
I thought about this but not for long, and decided it was my only option.
“I’ll do it,” I finally agreed.
