“This place looks a lot different to how it does in the pictures.” Jack said.
I agreed with him one-hundred percent. Lovelake did not look pretty, clean and colorful as it did on the internet. And I was sure that our house didn’t either.
As we drove our car into the driveway of the dark and mysterious house, our mouths dropped open. I was right. It was nothing like the pictures. It was dirty and the windows were covered in dust. I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like inside.
I got out of the car and walked towards the door of the house. Then, I turned the key in the lock and walked inside. The door creaked open as my parents and brother entered the room. The hallway was dark and dusty and the tiles on the floor moved around as we walked across them. At this point I was feeling furious at my parents. Where had they taken us?
Suddenly, I heard a strange noise. I turned around to see what had made it, but saw nothing. My parents and brother had vanished.
“Mum? Dad? Jack? Where are you” I asked in a confused voice.
There was no reply.
“Hello? Jack? Dad? Mum?” I asked again, louder.
There was still no reply. Where were they?
I looked out of the window to see if the car was still there. It was.
This was freaky. Seriously. I thought to myself. Were on earth were they?
The door was still open but no one was next to it. I closed my eyes and tried to clear my mind. I decided to look around the house for them closing the door before I left the hallway.
I continued into the next room, which must have been the sitting room. It was empty.
While I was looking around the house, I started to hear sounds.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...” someone whispered.
“Jack is that you?” I asked, getting to the point where I was about to wet my pants.
There was no reply. So I ignored it and continued to search the house for my vanished family. But after a few minutes, I heard it again.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...”
Who was it? Who was calling my name?
It continued.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...”
I blocked my ears with my hands and ran upstairs. I came across what looked like a bathroom and ran into it, locking the door behind me.
It took me several deep breaths before I could calm down.
Finally, the whispering stopped. But still, I was all alone in an empty, scary house and didn’t know what to do.
I turned to the sink to rinse my face. I looked into the large, dusty mirror that hung on the wall, above the sink. I wiped of the dust and cobwebs to get a clearer view of myself. I was a mess.
Confused and unsure about what I was going to do next, I reached for a towel to wipe my face. But something stopped me. I saw someone in the mirror. The person was looking right at me. I couldn’t quite see who it was so leaned in closer. It was my mother! How could that be?
“Mum?” I asked her, smiling a little, “Mum!”
She looked back at me, her smile looking disingenuous. I was confused, what was going on. Just for a moment, I was happy just to see her face. Suddenly, she vanished from the mirror. For a moment, there was no face in the mirror but after a few seconds, my father’s face appeared. He was smiling but he looked kind of...evil.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...” he started whispering very quietly, his voice becoming louder and his grin becoming wider.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...” his voice was so loud that it seemed he was shouting at me.
Tears streamed down my cheeks, I covered my ears and took more and more steps back until I couldn’t go further back.
“Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...” he wouldn’t stop saying. “Dionne. Dionne. Dionne...”
“No!!!” I tried to scream but nothing came out.
I turned around and tried to open the door but it wouldn’t open. It was locked. I shook the handle, occasionally turning around to see if my father was still in the mirror.
The door wouldn’t open!
Just then, the shouting stopped. I turned around to see my brother in the mirror.
“Oh, Jack! You-you’ll never guess what happened! I was j-just standing here a-and...-”
But he wasn’t listening. He grinned the same evil grin that my father had and just then, my smile turned to a frown in only a few seconds. Then, he let out a giggle. Which turned into a laugh and before I knew it, he was chuckling away at me. He was laughing at me.
“No!!!” I screamed as loud as I could, “Stop it!!!”
I tried opening the door again and realized that the reason it wasn’t opening was because I hadn’t undone the latch on it. The door flew open and I ran out of the room, smashing it closed behind me. At that point, I was crying my eyes out. I crashed down on my knees and lay down on the cold, hard floor. What was I going to do?
