Chapter 169: Interview Part 5

"Odd, I don't remember these details."

Anathema rose her head from the page. "Yes?" it sounded hopeful.

"Well, you see. My timing might be off."

                "Spill it, please."

"Um, from that time onward, before the Flood, I visited springs of natural holy water. I think that I was doing it for Crowley. He wanted so to bath in those waters...." So plaintive.

                "Angel."

"Yes! Right! Erm, and one night, under a cover of stars, I meet my dusky maiden."

                "Romantic."

"Not sure it's the right word. But.... virginal.... our minds.... virginal."

"Two socially awkward people finding each other. Perfectly in sync with this narrative."

"Olright? Um? But she edges closer, and she can see in me that even the most innocent of us can be touched by violence."

                "You know you're killing me."

"Sorry! So, there she is, there I am. And she.....sees....and is overwhelmed by sympathy.....and she asks to touch my cheek. And then I just, well...."

                "What?"

                "You know."

                "No."

                "I.....expressed...."

"Oh. No, okay, fine. I get it. But....really? From her touching your cheek?"

                "From her utter compassion."

"Angels," the little witch shook her head. Then," and she drew away then?"

"Anathema, she was so bashful! She thought she did me harm!"

                "And when was afterwards?'

                "What?"

"This was right before the Flood, right?"

And the angel thought, and the book appeared in his hand, and he dove into it.  He looked up startled.

"But of course! How thick of me!"

                "What?"

"Well, she had power over water! She survived the Flood! With our child in tow and....oh, heavens!" He read voraciously, his eyes starting to brim.

"What? What next!" Anathema felt a surge of expectancy, just happy for some good news.

The angel's head whipped up, beaming through his tears. "A sliver of a silver lining. I need to tell Crowley!"

                "What!?!"

                "Why, she saved his unicorn!!!"

"We searched, and I carried her on my back. And, sometimes? When I felt eyes on me? I hid her under my cloak, from sight and scent. We had a lot of fun, and I actually felt she was mine, after a sort. I forgot a few times whose child she really was.
