Chapter 133: Family Fun Time
"Jinny" shrieked, her cry an ambient noise that shook the heavens. She thundered, and ripped apart, trying to suffocate the fire in the shifting air currents.
When she came back together, the Thing was gone.
"Impossible! This form is mostly water!"
And the ocean waves echoed all around her," Everything flames with the old War Fires."
So, the sword was imbedded inside. Just another gem to take away from it.
"Where are you, you mismashed worm!" Her glowing eyes rolled along her own landscape, searching like a pair of doomsday suns. "You can't hide from me! And as soon as I find you, I'll unmake you with your own fears!"
But Its wings caught the winds, and fanned her to pieces. She snarled and drew back together, sniping while It grinned mirthfully at her
.... Again, the Thing mocked her.
For now, she knew, it was completely blind, and didn't need to see to find her.
.... with no nightmare to give it, she reflected its own shape, colored red and yellow. But it was a form she had no understanding of, and the Thing rapped around her and strangled.
The humans below could only stand and watch the heavens alight.
By now the wards were charged, the protective dome held. So everyone had a chance to gawp at the dazzling battle above. It was just close enough for them to make out the snaking forms dancing through the angry clouds. Newt came up to his wife, and everything was plain to see on his face.
"That.... unbelievable was it?" she inquired for details of the launch.
He could only nod as their eyes went back to the skies. Then, trying to process the details, he ventured, "Can you imagine a force of nature having a will?"
"I can try."
"Now imagine it smiling at you, as if you both shared a bad joke."
"Dear. God."
Another spellbound pause, and then," I can't stop thinking about one of those Aztec idols, you know? The ones with all the teeth, and bloody bits—"
"I.... suppose?"
"And then this great big whale breaks apart through one of them. But it's not a whale: that's the part your brain can handle at the time. No, the rest come up eventually like a bit of the landscape decided to go for a walk—"
"Newt, you're starting to lose me."
"Then," he finished, a little manically," It says, 'OH, hello, Bob, or whoever. The post flubbed it again, wouldn't ya know? I got your mail instead. Here's that nice letter you've been waiting for from your mum. Can I borrow this catalogue? I know you don't like fishing lures."
"Ok." Her fingers came up and firmly. "I think you've burnt a fuse, sweety. Why don't you go back to something more terrestrial and focus on the halogens?"
When he wandered away, she returned to eyes to the sky and wondered outloud," Probably would have exploded my head too."
Marjorie looked up, imagining a young Merlin seeing two viperous dragons released from the bowls of the earth to finish an old blood feud.
