Devil's backbone (Eddie munson au)

Part 15

Walking into the living room the group turns and looks at me. Dustin is the one to stand up and talk to me first.

"How is he?" The young kid looked worried.
"He is back asleep. I think the pain medicine is working." He nods, wringing his hands he still looks worried.

"When he wakes up next time I'll see if he is up for visitors." I say rubbing his shoulders. I could see how much Eddie meant to him. Pulling him into a hug.

"He is going to be ok. I'll make sure of it." I tell him.
"Is there anything else you need?" Steve steps forward.
"More gauze. Antibiotics, but I doubt you can get them so maybe just antibiotic ointment."

As a group we make a plan. Steve, Dustin and El were going on a medical supply run. They had a thought of using El to grab some antibiotics while Dustin and Steve cause a distraction. Joyce and hopper where going to go get more groceries to feed the cramped cabins Inhabitants. Jonathan, argyle and Will who I was introduced to earlier were staying with me. Jonathan had mentioned his girlfriend and her brother were on their way and he would introduce me to them.

"Hey argyle. You like to go for walks don't you." I ask walking into the kitchen area of the cabin.

"Well I thought you were with that Eddie dude." I sigh my suggestion going over his head.
"I've had a pretty stressful couple days. I could go for a walk. Destress, ya know." I can see it finally clicks in his head.
"Will, would you mind sitting with Eddie? Come and get me if he wakes up."

I will say this about argyle his stuff was a hell of a lot stronger then what I was used to with eddies. Eddie always made sure I wasn't stoned completely off my ass. But this, argyles purple palm tree delight, had me on my ass on the front porch staring at the roof and I completely lost track of time. I practically jumped out of my
Skin when the door opened and Will told me Eddie was awake. What only seemed alike a half hour was more like two. Stopping in the kitchen I chugged a glass of water to help with the cotton mouth and refilling it before heading into Eddie.
His eyes were closed until I laid down next to him, turning his head to look at me.

"You smell like pot." He laughs which turned into a groan.
"Argyle's shit is potent. I'm not used to it."
"Well shit hook me up. Who's argyle?"
"Um no, I already gave you pain meds, let's not put too much in your system. And he is, Jonathan and wills friend from California."
"Oh. Yea Will introduced himself when I woke up."
"How's your pain right now?"
"Well I'm not screaming bloody murder so I guess that's something."

"Do you want to try and sit up?" He give a not very enthusiastic sure. Hissing with pain as I help him sit up and put pillows behind his back. Hearing voices i assume people are coming back from their different missions.

"If your up to it dustin wants to see you." I say. Biting his lips he looks nervous but he nods. Kissing his head i walk back Into the living room.
Each person had their hands full with bags.
El steps forward and pull a big bottle of pills handing it to me.

"Will these work." Looking down at the label I read amoxicillin. To be honest I'm not sure, I only have a few months of nursing school, but they went threw a lot get these for Eddie, so I lie.
"They are perfect."
"We got gauze for days." Dustin says holding up the bags.

"You can take them in the room if you want. Eddie is awake and said he would like to see you." The kids eyes widen and look towards the door.

As soon as the door open I hear Eddie weak voice say "hey kid." Dustin quickly puts the bags on the desk and goes to Eddie, hugging him gently. I can still see Eddie grimace but he pats the kids back anyway.

"You scared us there for a bit." Dustin says sitting on the edge of the bed. Eddie looks sad but he manages a small smile for the kid.
"Couldn't let them get to Hawkins." He simple says.

"Did we defeat him?" He asks under his breath.
Dustin puts a hand to Eddie's shoulder.
"We'll talk about it when your better." A thousand yards stare takes over Eddie's face.
He was in a dark place.

"Ed's?"i say stepping forward. His eyes snap to mine and it takes a minute for the shadows to retreat from his eyes.

"Are you hungry?" I ask pushing his bangs away from his face, slyly feeling if he still had a fever. It's there but only Slightly, nothing like before.
He shakes his head no.

"We should get something in your stomach. It's probably been days since you ate." I say.
"Um.. that soup you make?" Knowing exactly what he is talking about a nod.
"When the rest get back I'll see if they have the stuff."

When Joyce and hopper come back I help her put groceries away and I was lucky enough they had everything I needed to cook my chicken and dumplings soup.

"Joyce is it alright if I make dinner. Eddie said he would eat if I made soup."
"Of course sweetheart! Any time I don't have too cook I'll take it." She joked.
"At least help you chop everything."
We worked silently beside each other, Joyce occasionally asking questions. About what I was going to school for?, how long Eddie and I have been together?

"Where did you learn this recipe?"
"From my grandmother before she passed. She would come watch me when I was sick and my parents worked. she would make this."
"It smells delicious."
"Thank you."

"Joyce do you think some one could take me back to the school to get my car? I have clothes and my bathroom stuff. I would love to take a shower." I say grabbing a bowl of the finished soup.

"Of course I'll have hopper take you." I tell her thank you then head in to give Eddie his soup only to find him asleep again. I gently touch his forehead.

"Eddie?" He opens his eyes slowly.
"I have your food. And it's time for more medicine." He doesn't say a word just nods. The pain must be making him very uncomfortable. Helping him sit up I hand him two pills one for pain, one an antibiotic. He groans bringing his hand to his mouth but takes the pills, I offer him a glass of water.
" can I eat later? Once the pills work." He asks.
"Of course." I say helping him lay back down.

Walking back out to the refrigerator I put the bowl away to be reheated later. Feeling a tap on my shoulder I look and a light brunette girl is standing there her hand out to greet me.
"Hi Im Nancy. Jonathan's girl friend."
"Um... hi I'm Sarah, Eddie's girlfriend."
" I know who you are. I remember when you broke your arm at the game. I was there covering it for the school news paper. Joyce said you wanted to go pick up your car. I volunteered to take you." She says with a sweet smile.
"Thank you."
After grabbing a bowl of soup for my self and checking that Eddie was still asleep, we headed to the school.

When the clock stuck nine o'clock, I knew I had to wake Eddie up and make him eat. Setting the reheated bowl on the desk, I slide into bed next to him. He had rolled on to his side, running a finger down his nose and tracing his lips the corner of his lips lift into a small smile.

"You smell like yourself again. Soap and oranges." He says peaking one eye open.
"My perfume has Orange blossom in it."I say smiling.
"It's the best smell in the world."  I lean forward and kiss him.
"You have to eat." I say and he just nods. He sits up a litter easier this time.  Grabbing the bowl I sit next to him, folding my legs under me. Giving him a spoonful of soup his eyes roll back.
"Oh god so good." He says moaning dramatically.

"I'm glad to see a bit of personality coming back." I tease.
"Well those pills are keeping me from agony. Plus your here so, instant better mood." He says before I stick another spoonful of soup in his mouth.
"Chicken soup can heal the world." I tease him once again.
"What day is it? How long was I out?" He asks.
"It's the March 29th. Almost 10 at night."
