Expectations

Saturday, it was 7 o'clock in the morning. Jim had decided to wake up extra early for once, so she would have enough time to prepare for going to the Jam&Roller peacefully. She thought that she expected a small little surprise, but deep down, all Jim wanted in the end was to be with her friends, just enjoying herself like always.
At 10 o'clock, she finally decided to get going, after probably having changed her hair and light make-up about five times before. What she found odd, was that nobody had congratulated her yet. Not over the phone, not per text... She thought nothing of it though, surely, they just wanted to wait to tell her in person... right?
So, with a small purple backpack and her keys in hand, Jim made her way to her favourite place in the world, the Jam&Roller. What she would find there would definitely surprise her...

Vs Reality

It took her longer than usual, a whole 45 minutes to be exact, to arrive. When she walked inside, all of her excitement about people waiting for her just poofed away.
No one noticed her. Nobody. So, fate had officially decided that Jim should take matters into her own hands.

At first, she walked over to the boys, but to her surprise, they just asked her how her day was going and ignored her after her short response. Her mood dropped a bit because of this, but hey, 'surely the others didn't forget!', she thought, still filled with hope. After being rejected by more of her friends, she slowly started to lose hope. However, there were two more people Jim believed in though and she knew just where to find at least one of them.

She quickly ran to the skating track and found exactly who she was looking for: her boyfriend Nico. "Hey Jim!", he exclaimed, sounding happy like always to see her, before embracing her in a tight hug. It was hard for him to contain himself.
"Hii! Uhh, I hate to ask, but do you have something for me?", Jim asked, biting her lip awkwardly.
"Hmm, no, any reason why?", Nico answered innocently, but on the inside, he was well-aware that he had just shattered his lover's heart.
"Well, Nico, it's because...", Jim started, trying to fight tears. "I-it's my birthday, remember? You know, turning 18? I've been hinting at it for days!"

"Oh sorry mi amor, I completely forgot, you know that I'm really not that great with dates", Nico said while putting his hand in his neck.
"But hey, if it cheers you up at least a tiny bit, something I can give you now is this paperclip." Jim tried her best to at the very least show off a slight smile as he handed it to her, but she was a bit confused nonetheless, since she knew for certain that usually, her boyfriend never messed up any dates, be it an anniversary or even just a doctor's appointment.
"Oh haha. No, it's alright, really. We can always meet up tomorrow.", Jim exclaimed.
"Of course! Whenever you'd like, darling", Nico answered, although still failing to impress her. "I'm sorry, I'm going to go now, see you", Jim said coldly, officially leaving Nico sad now as well as the two parted ways.
He hadn't liked this part of the plan since its beginning, but eventually, he thought that the ending would make it all even more worth-while.

Hurryingly, Jim made her way to the bar. Most certainly, her best friend Yam would be there to cheer her up...

She saw her sitting at the bar, sipping at an almost empty glass of orange juice. Jim made her way over to Yam, skipping.
"Hey, Yam!", she exclaimed excitedly. "Hey! Why are you so excited? Did anything happen?", Yam asked, leaving Jim shocked and speechless.
"Uhm, aren't you forgetting something?"
"No, why? Or at least I don't think so? Wait, is the Open today? Oh my god I gotta prac-"
"No Yam, it's something different." Jim grew a bit suspicious.
"It is?", Yam asked, trying her best to act normally. Finally, the acting classes Yam had been taking had the chance to come to good use. "Yes??", Jim responded nervously, tensing up her posture as a sign of defence and folding her arms together.
"Hmm, weird. I don't remember anything special being planned", Yam shrugged.
Jim turned mad, but managed to somewhat contain herself.
"Are you serious? How come no one remembers what day it is?!"
"Oops, sorry. Anyway, I'm going to my place to study a bit, wanna come?", Yam dismissively said.
That was Jim's final straw.
"I am not going anywhere if in the next five minutes you don't tell me why today was special to me!", Jim yelled in Yam's face, feeling no remorse.
Yam remained silent and Jim stepped back a bit, the realisation had finally struck her:

No one remembered her birthday.
No one cared that today was a very special day for her. She had envisioned them all wrongly this entire time.
None of them actually cared for her, not even the person whom she thought of to be her best friend. The only thing she felt like was a disaster of emotions, but in the end, sadness entirely took over.

After a minute of silence, Yam finally dared to speak. She barely brought out the words: "I best get going."
She was shocked by her friend's reaction. Of course, she knew Jim would take it badly, but in fact, she definitely hadn't seen this coming. Yam deeply hoped the party would make up for this sadness.
"Maybe you should... bitch", Jim murmured as Yam quickly left the building, not even hearing that last part in the process of doing so. She quickly rushed home and grabbed all of the supplies for later. Jim was left completely alone.

(I apologize for the long uploading break!)
