"Well, we're getting rid of you very, very soon. Soon enough to say that I'm honored to be the one carrying out your execution."
"...Can you call my husband?"
"You still want to speak to that moron? I'm getting what I want and he still hasn't figured out where you are."
"Just call him. I'm not going to argue with you today."
"You just love to boss people around, don't you?" Aaron snapped his fingers at one of the men. "Two minutes. That's all the time you get."
"I'm not going to need two minutes."
He chuckled and walked over to the only chair in the room. Honestly, I wouldn't call it a room. It was more of an empty space with a door. No windows. No ventilation. It was always hot and stuffy here. I'm sure I passed out a couple of times. Aaron had been a man of his word, I haven't had anything to eat since the last time I really argued with him.
On top of that, he's been beating me for no reason. I thought I'd heard another woman when he opened the door, but he told me to mind my own business and hit me. I stopped fighting back. I didn't have the energy to. No matter how much I tried to convince myself this would end soon, Aaron would remind me that he could drag this out for as long as he wanted to. I knew he was lying, though.
A phone was shoved into my hand. I looked at it for a few seconds. I'd forgotten what I'd asked Aaron to let me do. I guess when you have other things to worry about, this happens. I put the phone up to my ear.
"What do you want, Aaron? I'm not going to ask you again," Asher snapped. What has Aaron done to him that has him answering the phone like this?
"...This isn't Aaron," I muttered.
"Lexi!"
"I thought you would come for me."
"I am. I'm on my way right now!"
It's funny how men can lie when they're scared. They pretend they're tough and can do anything. He can't do everything. If it took him this long just to realize he'd never find me, then he was never good at finding things. Even I work well under pressure.
"...Lies. You really expect me to believe that?" I asked.
"I want you to believe I'll never leave you to die. Not like this. You and I made a promise to each other, Lexi. I won't ever leave you," Asher sobbed into the phone.
I really wanted to cry, but I had come to terms with my fate. Aaron had really reached his limit. He had been coming up with the worst way to kill me. He even asked for my opinion not even an hour ago. I guess I can thank him for that. Even till the end, he was always a bit considerate.
"I don't think I can believe anything you say anymore. The last time I spoke with you, you said you were on your way. I don't know how long it's been, but it's best if you just give up and go back home. Whether I live or die is my choice now. I just know you better not let Luca have my kids."
"Lexi..."
"Goodbye, Asher."
The room was quiet once I hung up. Aaron sat back in his chair, satisfied with how the conversation had gone. Asher probably won't see me again. Well, not alive. It's a little sad, but at least he knows he doesn't have to look for me anymore. No need to waste time on looking for my body. Aaron has proven to be more malicious than I thought. Dragging out a punishment is something Satan would do.
"Now that that's settled, I think we all should go on a nice car ride." Aaron slapped his thighs and stood up.
"That's something you say to a dog when you want to take them to the vet," I pointed out.
"...It fits the situation, don't you think?"
I didn't say anything. What was the point? He was going to hit me again, if I dared to argue with him. Besides, I was thirsty. Maybe he'd give me something to drink. Maybe I'd get something to eat. It would be my last meal. That wasn't an execution joke.
It didn't take them long to tie a burlap sack over my head, hogtie me, and throw me over someone's shoulder. In light of everything Aaron has done, I don't think he's assassin material. If everything had been switched, I would have killed him the moment he gathered the files with me. I would have left his body in the woods behind that hotel.
Before then, I would have made him take a taxi to meet me at the hotel. I wouldn't have shown my face to anyone. He got lucky with that one. In the photos that had been sent to Asher, only his face had been blurred out. It was like someone was trying to protect his identity. I don't get why Asher didn't find that suspicious. He was more focused on me cheating than my safety. Some husband he is.
When I returned to reality, I had already been put in a vehicle with headphones on. Classical music was playing again. We were moving a little too fast. My body was shifting every so often. Sometimes the vehicle would go over a bump. If they hadn't strapped me in, then I would have gone flying. I'm sure of it.
I knew we had made it to my final destination when the music was suddenly shut off. I heard Aaron and his little buddy get out and chat for a little bit. I guess they thought they had all the time in the world. Ugh, I wish they would kill me already.
"All right, missy." Aaron removed the headphones and took the sack off of my head. "I'll let you see where we are. The least I can do is let you see how beautiful the sunset is."
I lifted my head and caught the last few seconds of the sun going down. I sighed in defeat and looked out into the endless desert. Aaron seemed to croon at something. I cringed, earning a dirty look. It's not my fault everything he does makes me want to kill myself.
"I don't usually like getting the inside of my vehicles dirty, but you're something special, Lexi. Besides, I wanted to get the interior redone again."
"...Just kill me already."
"It was nice knowing you. Say hello to Satan for me."
