" Adrianah. I suppose I owe you an explanation-"
"No, mom, it's alright. Just tell me what happened afterward."
"Well..."
(P.O.V. of Kit Derrick)
"It was the slam of the front door that woke me up. I quickly got out of bed and walked to your bedroom.
You weren't there.
On returning to my room, I realized that Katia wasn't in her crib.
Running downstairs, I opened the front door and was about to yell your names, when Lukas stopped me. I felt so helpless, so frightened. I just turned around and, burying my face on Lukas's chest, I just cried.
I didn't even notice that Lukas took me upstairs to our bedroom. It was there I woke up. I thought it was just a nightmare, as I thought I could hear your laughs from the other room, but as soon as Lukas came in, I knew it was real. We abandoned the cabin and went into the other town. I considered telling the authorities there about you and your sister. Lukas said not to, as that would complicate matters. We had to find you ourselves. We searched and searched. We asked in orphanages and care homes.
Nothing.
It was as if you disappeared.
Then, a year ago, I heard of this orphanage. I came here and asked them of you. They said they didn't have you under their care. But soon after you came, here. I tried again, just out of motherly instinct, and here you are."
"Mom....." I began, "I'm so so sorry!"
"Shhhh....it's not your fault."
I clung on to my mom. After a long silence, I asked,
"Are you still together with Lukas?"
"Yes, we are," my mother replied smiling, "we plan on getting married when we get you and Katia back. Speaking of which, where is Katia?"
