Chapter 34

Days passed by slowly. They were no longer allowed to visit Gwil outside of visitor hours. That meant they only had two hours each day to see him. How much they hated the rule, it did give Ben and Joe more time to be with Addison. She was slowly recovering. Her ankle had stopped hurting. In two days they'd have to go back to the hospital to do a full body check on Addison. It had been two weeks since the accident and if all went right, they could have her practice walking again.

Gwil, however, was still stuck on bed rest. His bruised cheekbones and his bruised shoulder were starting to heal. Which meant that he had an easier time talking. Although he still didn't talk much. His therapist was coming over three times per week to talk to him. Today Ben and Joe were at the hospital together because they were allowed to have a sit down with Gwil's therapist. This was planned during visitation hours so they weren't able to see Gwil. They brought Lucy along to keep Gwil company. Lucy had been away on a work trip when the accident happened and she didn't have a chance to see Gwil yet. 

They left Addison at Rami's. Scarlett was currently at school but Addison wasn't allowed to go until next week. Lucy walked into Gwil's room. She bit on the inside of her cheek while she looked at Gwil. 
"Hi," Gwil said.
"Hi, how are you holding up?" Lucy asked while she walked over to him.
"I am alive," Gwil said. Lucy chuckled.
"I can see that, silly," Lucy said. She sat down on the chair next to Gwil's bed. 
"Could you? I think I look more like a zombie," Gwil said. He held his hands in front of him while making some weird noises.
"Is this the start of an apocalypse?" Lucy asked. Gwil chuckled.

"I am alright, I guess," Gwil said. Lucy nodded. 
"Do you want to talk about it?" Gwil shrugged. 
"I never thought like this would have such a big impact on me. I know I will physically recover. How bad that looks right now, will pass. The doctors are very optimistic. I just wish the pain was a little less. And that I would be able to get out of bed. They have to help me with everything. Like, literally everything," Gwil said. Lucy nodded while she listened intently. 
"But the mental stuff is a lot worse. I have yet to have a full night of sleep without waking up from the memories. It just startles me constantly. And I know Addison is fine, Ben and Joe keep telling me that. They are right, I know that. It's a miracle that she got away with minor injuries and that she somehow doesn't remember anything that happened. I am so thankful for that. But the fact that it could have gone wrong. That the outcome of what happened could have been different doesn't leave me alone," Gwil said. Lucy nodded.

"You need to remind yourself that it did turn out alright. Addison is okay. She really is," Lucy said. Gwil nodded.
"I know. I don't have those flashbacks or whatever you call them on purpose. It doesn't help that I am stuck alone in bed all day. It gives my mind room to worry," Gwil said. With his good arm, he pushes against the mattress to adjust himself. His face scrunches up in pain.
"When I woke up, she was gone. They took her away from me. They kept telling me she was okay. But she was gone. They kept her away from me for over six hours. I thought for sure she didn't make it. And then Ben walked in with her. She is so scared of me," Gwil said. Tears were welling up in his eyes. Lucy stood up from her chair.  She carefully wiped the tears away before placing a kiss on Gwil's forehead. 
"I can't believe how that must have felt. I am so sorry this has happened to you, Gwil," Lucy said. Gwil brought his hand to his eyes while his body shook with silent tears. 

For a while, Lucy stood next to the bed. Her hand brushed over Gwil's arm. 
"She is not scared of you, Gwilym. Not at all. Your injuries might make you a little rough to look at right now. That might be the reason why she seemed scared in the beginning. She loves you Gwil, a whole lot. I am not even joking when I tell you that every day she stays with us, she asks us at least five times how long it would be until she can visit you." Gwil removed his hand to look Lucy in the eyes. When he realized that she was telling the truth, his eyes widened. 
"Really?" 
"Really," Lucy said while smiling softly. Gwil nodded slowly. 

"Gwilym, you are going to adopt her. You are practically her dad by now. Of course, she loves you," Lucy said. Gwil avoided her eyes.
"And so do Ben and Joe. They are extremely worried about you," Lucy continued. 
"I know that. They keep telling me," Gwil mumbled. 
"They want to help you. They really do. And they are trying their very best. But when you don't communicate with them, they don't know how to help you. Do you remember that time when Joe just broke up with Nathan?" Gwil nodded.
"Do you remember how badly we wanted to help him? But he wouldn't tell us how we could help or what he was struggling him. You and Ben had to teach him that he needed to learn to talk about that. This is no different, Gwil. I know how hard this is for you, but they are your husbands. If anyone can help you, it's them," Lucy said. Gwil nodded.
"You are right."

"I have something for you," Lucy said while she opened her bag. From within she took a colorful drawing.
"Scarlett made this for you," Lucy said while handing it to Gwil. It was a drawing of Gwil, Scarlett, and Addison at what Gwil assumed was the park. At the top, get well soon was scribbled in Rami's handwriting. 
"Tell her that I love it," Gwil said. 
"She really wants to see you, but maybe it's best to wait a little bit longer." Gwil nodded.
"Yeah, I don't really look handsome now, do I?" Gwil asked.
"You're always handsome," She joked before shooting him a wink. 

Ben and Joe walked back in. Lucy immediately stood up.
"I am going to wait outside," She said.
"Take care of yourself. Remember what we talked about," Lucy said. Gwil immediately nodded. Gwil could see Joe's red puffy eyes from where he stood next to the door.
"That was a tough conversation," Joe admitted before he walked over.
"Gwil, what about we talk about this tomorrow? You look bloody exhausted," Ben said. Gwil hummed. They said good night before Ben and Joe left.
