Three weeks. It's been three weeks. It feels like time is dragging on forever. Not that I haven't enjoyed living with Ashley Grace, it's just that Katie was right. Summer isn't as much fun as the school year was.

Speaking of Ashley Grace, we're not only living together but working together. I work in the back as a cook or food runner depending on where they need me. Ash works as a waitress or seater. It's not terrible but the boss definitely isn't as kind or forgiving as Jay. But I suppose beggars can't be choosers. The place is within walking distance from our apartment and pays the bills plus a little.

Ashley had the night off, technically we both did. But I offered to cover a shift for someone since I had nothing better to do. My back aches as I stand waiting for the elevator doors to open. The bell dings as the doors slide open. "Hey stranger. What the heck are you doing here?"

"I live here. What are you doing here?" The light dances in her stunning green eyes.

I'm sure the shock is written all over my face. "You're kidding. I live here."

Sam shakes her head. "I'm not. I've been living here since the beginning of summer. Is this the place you were talking about moving into with Ashley?"

"Yeah," I laugh. "Talk about a small world! I can't believe we've been in the same building for three weeks and didn't even know it. What floor do you live on?"

"Ten." She says tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "You?"

"Twenty-five. It's not the best place but the view is incredible. Especially as the sun first comes up and just before it sets in the evening. You should come check it out sometime." I don't know why but as the words tumble from my lips, my face heats up.

"Maybe, yeah. Hey, are you busy? I was just going to grab a late dinner, you could come with if you want?"

"I just got off work." I gesture to my outfit. "I probably smell like onions and garlic. I can run up and shower if you want to wait on me. If not, I totally understand." Why am I so awkward?

"It's ok. You're probably tired anyway. Text me when you're not busy. If not, we're bound to run into each other again." Her half smile makes me feel guilty.

"I'll do that."

Two days later I finally have a day off. After catching up on some sleep I check in with my friends. Everyone seems to be having a great summer so far. And even though I know it's not the best idea, I text Whitney anyway.

When she doesn't respond, I scroll social media for a bit. Then I come across Katie's post. She has a boyfriend. They're posing together on a pontoon boat in the middle of a lake, his hand grabbing a handful of her ass. I knew it wouldn't take long. Her skin is already tanned and she looks great in the yellow bikini top and jean shorts she's wearing. She looks so happy. I make a mental note to text her later and congratulate her.

Since Ashley Grace is working today I'm bored out of my mind. We usually have a somewhat similar schedule, this week is just all out of whack. Then I remember Sam! I wonder what she's up to.

<You busy today?

Ten minutes pass and no response. Well, now what? No one seems to want to talk today and I can't just sit all day I might as well do my laundry. Sure wish this damn building had a gym. I'm really missing being on campus right about now.

The dryer buzzes at the same time as my phone.

Sam: "Hey! Sorry, I didn't see your message earlier. I'm just hanging out today. What's up?"
