The next day, it's pouring rain when Charlotte leaves her apartment for her night shift. Of course it's raining in Seattle, so what's new? Opening her green and gold umbrella, she makes the 20-minute walk to work in the dark. She only had two nights' shift left to do, then her schedule changes to day shift. She walks into the ER with minutes to spare. She puts her purse and lunch in her locker and slips on her white doctor's coat. Even after two years of residency, she still felt special putting it on. She had worked so hard at Harvard to get her PHD that this jacket was her reward. And working at this hospital named after her brother was a dream!

"Evening Doc."

"Hi Olivia! What's on the roster?"

"Not much, fever in 1, broken leg in 2 and Ed is back," Olivia groans

"My buddy Mr. Ed!"

Ed was a sweet homeless man. He reminded her of her grandfather. He tended to come in on nights like this to get out of the rain. He was diabetic and Charlotte would help him regulate his glucose and get him his insulin shot. And on more than one occasion, she gave him her lunch, so much so that she now packed an extra sandwich every shift.

"Where is he?"

"Room 3,"

"Ok I'm on it."

Charlotte walks into exam room 3.

"Mr. Ed! How are we doing today?"

"Dr. Charlotte, I need my shot, please. And one of those yummy sandwiches you always seem to have."

"Of course, Mr. Ed, let me get the nurse started on the test and insulin. I'll go get you that sandwich."

"Thank you, Dr. Charlotte. You are always so nice to me."

Charlotte walks out of the room and tells Olivia to give Ed his tests and shot. She sneaks into the break room to grab the sandwich and, at the same time, decides to make herself a coffee. Coffee in hand, she delivers her sandwich to Mr. Ed and checks the patient board. Nothing new. She decides it's time to go check on her John Doe and takes the stairs to the 4th floor. She sees Meredith standing at the nurses' station.

"Mere, how's my patient today?"

"Char, we need to talk," Meredith says with a very serious look on her face.

"Shit, what did I do now?"

"Nothing. Come with me."

They walk into John Doe's room and Meredith closes the door and privacy curtain.

"Ok Mere, what's going on?" Charlotte asks a bit worried

"So... I want to make sure I'm not going crazy. This guy came in last night with heavy bruising and a ruptured spleen, looking like he fell off a building, correct?"

"Mere?"

"Correct?" She insists.

"Yes, Mere, you are correct. This gentleman came in last night to the ER with heavy bruising and a ruptured spleen."

"And I operated on him less than 24 hours ago. Correct?"

"Correct,"

Meredith then pulls down the patient hospital gown to reveal his chest and stomach.

"Then why does it look like these injuries happened over a week ago?"

"What the hell?"
They both look at the patient's stomach. The incision from last night's operation was there but looked like it had healed for at least a week already. A reddish scar was all that was left. The bruising was also still there but was faded to a light yellow.
