There she stood a vision of beauty. He walked further into the room, heading towards her. He didn't know what he was going to say. Jasmine had told him earlier to be open minded.
‘Open minded.’ He thought as he strode towards her with what looked like self-belief.
He took a deep breath and plucked up the courage to speak to her. He cleared his throat and she turned around. “Hello Jayden.” She greeted. Jayden could already tell that was more the nervous one out of the two. “Hello, Riaz.” ‘This is going well’ he thought to himself. “Do you want a drink?” he asked her like the gentleman he is. She nodded yes, with a polite smile. “What would you like?”
“Something light, I want to get home sober today.”
“Oh, I’ll make sure that you do.” If there was another thing Jayden didnt like, it was drunks. After a two minute wait for their drinks, they took a seat at the far back; for privacy.
“So Jayden, tell me more about yourself.” The last time they spoke, Jayden had not told Riaz about alot of things in his life. He spoke about jasmine, but left important details out. She had picked up on this as he had not spoken about his parents or friends. Just jasmine and himself. He didn't bother going into detail. As far as he was concerned she was just another one of them. People who like tointervine and bring judgement into your life.
“Well I don’t know where to start.”
“I never did ask how old you were.”
“21 just turned 21 last month.” She nodded her head slowly. “And yourself.” He asked realising he also didn't know her age.
“20, nearly twenty one though.” when he didn't say anything she carried on. “So, how come a smart person like you doesn’t go to uni?” when he didn't reply to her age, it was because he was in deep thought. He wondered why she was so interested in his life. No one had ever cared before. No one had ever shown an interest in his life.
“I guess you could say I’ve had a tough life.” He replied not wanting to give away too much information, when he had come back from his thoughts.
“So do you live by yourself then?” she asked inquisitively. Jayden picked up on this and replied simple;
“No.” She put her glass on the table. “I live with my sister Jasmine. Remember I told you about her.” She nodded her head “So do you live by yourself then?”
“Something like that.” Jayden raised an eyebrow. Riaz had realised this and quickly changed the subject. “How old did you say Jasmine was again?”
“15 going on 50.” He replied noticing her change in conversation. “She thinks she’s a big woman. It was her idea for me to go out tonight.”
“so you look after your sister?”
“Something like that.” He said looking her straight in the eye. She raised an eyebrow.
“Fair enough.” She tapped her fingers on the table as she looked around. She stopped tapping her fingers and slowly turned to Jayden. She then sighed. “I live with my boyfriend. Were going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment.” She carried on glaring at Jayden waiting for his reaction. Jayden nodded slowly.
“My mum died, I’ve been looking after jasmine ever since.” Inside the both of them felt relieved. They now had someone they could trust and talk to about their problems equally. This was a new feeling for Jayden and he was a little over whelmed. You could say that deep down he was ecstatic, but Jayden was never one to show emotions.
“When did she die?” Jayden picked up his drink and took a few sips, before he even attempted to answer.
“A few years ago.” She didn't move nor blink, just stared. “Six years ago.” Jayden concluded with a slight agony in his voice. Although Riaz had never experienced death of anybody close to her, she felt his pain.
“You were 15.” She whispered to herself, when she had realised. Jayden nodded putting his head down in shame. “You have nothing to be ashamed of. You should be proud. You were 15 and you looked after your sister all by yourself? I mean, you had help right?”
“Narh not really, but it was okay. We got by. I admit that I had to do something’s I wasn’t proud of, but I did what I had to do. All I know is that if I never done those things then I wouldn't be able to sit here and tell you how much I love jasmine, because they would have probably split us up and i would have never seen her again.” Jayden could feel himself becoming emotional. “She’s my world, everything I do, I do for her. She made me the man I am today.” All the time Jayden was speaking he had his head down, until he was finished and finally looked up at her. she held onto his hand that was rested on the table.
“I knew you were different, you’re not like the rest of them.” She said quietly.
“Your boyfriend. Is he different?” she kept her focus on her glass.
“Different, no. A prick, yes. But we’re not here to talk about him.” She brightened up as she said her last statement. “So jasmine, tell me more about her.”
“Well, where do I start? She’s bright, nothing gets past her. She’s in love with that Troy Simpson breddah, the one that sings.“
“You mean Trey Songz.” She cut him off.
“Yeah him. She made me buy tickets for her and her friends and made me sit in the car and wait for her.” she began to laugh hard. It made me smile. She had a beautiful laugh, it was just amazing.
“Wow she is something else. I’d like to meet her.”
“I’m sure the two of you would get along just fine.” He smiled genuinely. He noticed that he had been smiling for most if the night. Something he never did unless he was around Jasmine.
They had spent the rest of their time together, laughing and getting to know each other more. From likes to dislikes and even their childhood memories. This was a night that they both would treasure greatly.
They were now stood on Riaz’ door step as Jayden had offered to take her home, which she politely accepted. “Well, I guess I should go now. I had a lovely night.” Riaz smiled gracefully at Jayden.
“Yeah, I’ll see you Monday.” Jayden said walking away.
“Wait.” Riaz pulled back Jayden. “Do you want to come in for a coffee, or something?”
“what about your boyfriend?”
“He doesn’t exactly live here at the moment.” Jayden nodded in approval and they both went in.
