“Jayden is mummy looking down on us right now?” Jasmines innocent voice spoke as she sat on his lap playing with his ear lobe.

“Yeah baby sis, she's smiling too,” Jayden adjusted Jasmine on his lap. “And she told me to give you this.” Jayden leaned in and kissed her on her forehead. She grinned, showing him a gap where her two front teeth had fallen out.

“I love you Jayden and mummy loves you too. She said she’ll always be in our hearts and will never leave us, so don't cry.” She wiped the stray tear that had left his eye and reached up to kiss his forehead.

“I love you too Jas. You’re my everything. I’ll never let anyone hurt you. I’d kill for you. One day I’m gonna be able to give you everything you want and deserve.” Jasmine nodded with a small smile and rested her head on his chest. He knew she didn't understand the full intent of what he was saying.

“When are Uncle Ky and Aunty Mel coming? I want them to taste my cupcakes.” Jayden ran his hands through her bushy hair. She yawned.

“Soon Jazzy. They’ll be here by the time you wake up.”

“Okay.” She said yawning once more. “Love you Jay.”

“Me too.” He kissed the top of her head and allowed her to fall asleep on his chest. He didn't want to let go of her. She was what was keeping him sane. She was what kept him going. Without her, there’d be no purpose for him on Earth. He listened to her light breathing, tears pouring down his expressionless face. “It’s okay. I’ll protect you.” He whispered to a sleeping Jasmine.

Broken Heart.

A broken heart is a metaphor used to describe the hurt someone feels after loosing someone.

He felt sick, his stomach churned.

They say you can mend a broken heart.

He felt like someone had stolen his heart, crushed it and given it back to him, in a tattered form.

People loose their appetite.

The smell of food made him heave. His chest tightened and his breathing came to a halt.

Some suffer from depression and lack of sleep.

Jayden spent most days awake. He didn't sleep. When he did attempt to sleep he tossed and turned throughout. When he closed his eyes, he saw her. He could hear her laugh and feel her soft touch. That scared him.

He would watch little Jasmine sleep, scared that God would take her from him, just like he did with his mother.

“Time will heal all wounds.”

They lied, Jayden had thought. If that was so true, why did he wince at every broken heart beat?

Death can lead to many emotions. Sad, worried, scared, shocked, unprepared, confused...

Jayden-non of the above. Just plain and empty. He was numb.

Sometimes Jayden held a blade to his wrists. As soon as the blade was close enough to pierce his skin, he would hear his mothers voice telling him ‘No’. He wanted to die but he couldn’t, for he had Jasmine to look after and fend for. If it weren’t for her, he’d have died along time ago.

Jasmine had been sat inside her history class watching the clock tick. When it got to the last 10seconds, she began to count down.

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. Jasmine along with five other people sprang up and quickly packed away their things. Jasmine tried to listen as the teacher shouted something about homework as they rushed out the room. Her phone began to vibrate and she answered it.
