“Jayden?” Jayden looked at a suspicious Jasmine. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Jasmine asked with a smirk.
“I know you’re up to something.” He un-squinted his eyes. “What do you want?”
“I was just wondering if you’d let me got out with a friend.” Jayden frowned.
“Why wouldn't I?”
“Because it’s a boy.” Jayden stared at Jasmine for a few seconds.
“Well, you’re right. You can’t go.” Jasmines mouth widened in shock.
“Jayden, please. It’s not like we’re going to do anything. We’re going to the cinema.”
“No.” Jayden said simply. “Don’t you have exams to revise for?” Jayden said getting up and walking out of the living room. Jasmine followed him into the kitchen.
“Jayden, you’re being really mean lately. I thought getting you a girlfriend would make you nicer. It’s turned you into a bitch.” Jayden shot Jasmine a look.
“Watch your mouth.” He pointed a finger at her. Once he turned around Jasmine made faces behind her back at him. “Oh yeah, Riaz and her brothers coming for dinner on Saturday.” Jasmine rolled her eyes.
“Okay, whatever.” Jasmine sighed. She walked out the kitchen and went to her room.
Jasmine sat in her room, on the phone to her friend.
“Rah, your brothers deep.” Her friend spoke into the phone. “So, he aint gonna let you come?” Jasmine sighed and growled.
“He’s so stuck up. He weren’t like this before.” Jasmine’s friend chuckled.
“It’s cool babe. We can do it another time. There’s no rush.” He said calmly.
“That’s not the point. The fact is, he’s changed.” Jasmine was now angry and frustrated.
“How has he changed?” Jasmine’s friend asked intrigued.
“Well, he’s got this girlfriend and I think she’s been gassing up his head or something.” She sulked.
“Yeah maybe. I think you should talk to him and sort it out.”
“Why are you such a nice person?”
“I dunno babe, I just am. So am I going to see you tomorrow?”
“If you want to.”
“You know I want to. I’ll come and pick you up from your school. Where do you want to go?”
“I dunno. I’ll tell you when I see you.”
“Ite, Jas. I’ll see you tomorrow yeah.”
“Bye.” Jasmine said into the phone before hanging up.
Riaz looked at the silver analogue clock situated above her mantel piece, in her living room. The time was 5pm. She was expecting her mother anytime now. Although she didn't want to see her, she wanted Ice to see his mother. She had not told Ice that his mother was coming to visit him. Instead she told him that there was someone she’d like him to meet.
She didn't want Jayden snooping around either, for ‘moral support’ as he called it, when she told him that her mother was coming over. Riaz told Jayden to spend some quality time with Jasmine.
“Riaz, when is this person coming? I was supposed to be meeting someone today.” Ice asked as he walked into the living room. His voice startled her.
“You shouldn’t creep up on people you know.” She held her chest and consoled her breathing.
“You didn't answer my question.” He retorted, in a kid like way.
“They should be coming soon.” Riaz said, her eyes going back to the clock.
“Who is it anyway?” He eyes then went back to Ice.
“You’ll see.” Ice eyed her suspiciously, *and then waved off her strange behaviour.
“Riaz, I’ve been thinking about what you said about going to counselling, and I think it’s a good idea.” Riaz stared at him, waiting for him to tell her he was joking, but he didn't.
“Seriously?” She asked shocked. He nodded with a big grin. She leaped across the room and jumped on him. “Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so glad that you’re doing this.” She repeatedly kissed his cheek.
“Alright stop now.” Ice said pushing her away from him slightly. Riaz giggled and stroked his cheek.
“I remember when you were a baby. You always used to look up at me with those brown eyes, waiting for me to pick you up.” She sighed and then sat down again. He sat beside her. “I actually thought that you’d never get this far. I thought that you’d kill yourself or something.”
“Thanks.” Ice said sarcastically.
“No, I don't mean it like that. It’s just, your were so angry. More angry than you get now. Ice we couldn’t even send you to school, you would have killed another child.” He chuckled. “It’s not funny.” His face then turned serious. “I love you.” Riaz smiled.
“Me too.” Ice patted her shoulder. The doorbell rang and Ice stood up to get it.
“No, I’ll get it.” Riaz shot up from her seat and rushed to the door.
“Hello Riaz. I'm so hungry; you haven’t got anything to eat, have you?” Riaz sighed and let Cleo step pass her and into the house. She shut the door and gestured for Cleo to go into the living room.
“Ice, this is Cleo. Our mum.” Ice studied the women from head to toe and then from toe to head. His face as straight as a ruler. His jaw clenched and his fist tightened. He remembered the breathing tips Jayden had given him, for when he got angry.
‘Breath in and out, in and out’ He repeated in his head.
“Why is she here Riaz?” He asked, not taking his eyes off the woman.
“She wanted to see you.” His eyes shot to Riaz.
“But you knew I didn't want to see her. She knows I didn't want to see her.” His finger was pointed in Cleo’s direction.
“Ice-“
“Don't talk.” He shouted at Cleo, after her attempt to apologise for not being there for him. “Get out. If you ever come back here, I will kill you myself.” He said through gritted teeth. Cleo eyes welled with tears. A shocked Riaz stood in the doorway not sure what to do. Cleo looked to Riaz.
“I think I better go now. I won’t be leaving. But I’ll stay out of your way. If you ever want to talk, this is where I’ll be staying.” Cleo handed Riaz a piece of paper with an address. Cleo’s tear dropped on Riaz hand. “Bye.” Cleo whispered before leaving.
“Riaz, I'm not joking. I will kill her.”
