She Doesn't Deserve It

Months passed. Jasmine and Courtney had become closer. This scared Jayden, he didn't want his little sister to grow up to fast and come home to tell him that he was going to be an uncle. Although he despised their relationship, he couldn’t really do anything about it because she’d still go and see him anyway. He and Riaz were going strong. Jayden felt like she was definitely the one and on many occasions, he was tempted to ask her to be his wife. He never did though because he didn't want to scare her away with his commitment.

“I can’t do this to her.” Courtney whispered into the phone. “I think I'm falling in love with her.”

“I knew this would happen, you're too soft.” Magic replied after a long sigh.

“Look, whatever her brother has done,-”

“He killed my brother Courtney!” Magic shouted aggressively down the phone. The huskiness of his voice caused the phone to vibrate against Courtney’s hand.

“But it wasn't him though, was it?” Courtney replied trying to smooth over the situation.

“He was fucking there though. He let his dickhead friend put a gun to my brother’s head. If his friend is gonna keep running from me, then I'm going after him and his family. So you just do what you have to do, yeah?” Magic concluded.

“I can’t do this to her. She doesn’t deserve it.” Courtney pleaded.

“If you can’t do it, I’ll get someone else to do it.”

“Yeah but, she's not gonna do it with anyone else,” Courtney though for a moment. “Unless.”

Magic chuckled. “My, my, you do catch on fast, don't you?” He patronised.

“Don't fucking touch her Magic!”

“Or what? What are you going to do? Tell her brother?” Magic hanged up the phone.

Courtney growled and punched the wall. “Fuck this!”

“Jas,” Jasmine turned around and faced her brother. “Do you remember this?” Jayden held up a chain that said ‘MUM’. Jasmine smiled and held her hand out for it. Jayden softly placed the chain in her hand.

“Yeah. Do you remember that awkward moment when she asked us how we paid for it?” They both laughed.

“Yeah, you couldn’t keep your mouth shut and told her that we found it. You were a little blabber mouth.”

“Shut up!” Jasmine punched his shoulder. “It was you're fault anyway. How can you pick up a chain you found in a park and give it to your mother, for mother’s day? Very thoughtful.”

“Whatever. It’s not like we were rich. Trust me, if I had the money to get her something I would have.” They both stared at the chain.

“If you could say one last thing to her, what would it be?” Jasmine broke the silence.

Jayden thought for a bit before answering. “I would tell her that she's the best mother in the world and I’d never stop loving her.” Jayden leaned against the counter. “What about you?”

“I’d tell her that I wish I could spend more time with her and get to know her better.” Jayden wiped a tear from her cheek.

“She was an amazing person.” He whispered.

“I know.” He embraced her in a hug.  “You know, it’s true what they say. You never realise the importance of something until it’s gone.”

Jasmine sat on her bed, legs crossed and staring at her phone. She was tempted to call him, and she almost did, until a voice in her head told her otherwise. Instead she called Alicia. “Jazzy!” Alicia shouted into the phone, startling Jasmine. “What's good with you Baby Love?” Alicia recited her favourite line.
