The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it...
The Gospel of John. Chapter 1, verse 5.

"Will you show me how to do a kickflip, Pete?"

"Another time, Arm... it's time for me to come back home."

Perhaps, this opportunity to skateboard is his only joy.

"Uh... now?"

"Yeah," Pete pulls down his thin beanie, from under which the overgrown bangs hang over his eyes, "see ya, dude."

They bump knuckles, and then Pete nudges the skate with his toe and catches it in the air. It's getting close to nine in the evening, and it's really time for him to go home.

What I don't want to do at all.

What awaits him there? Eternal pity in his dad's eyes. A mute reproach - as if he himself chose to be like this! - in the father's gaze. And endless feeling of despair and emptiness of life.

Pete knows he'll be told off if he's late, so he decides to take a shortcut. It's ridiculous but just in theory... who will covet an omega that only looks like a representative of his gender?Otherwise, he is, no matter how sad it may be to admit, a barren. By his twenty-two, Pete has wondered more than once how his life might have turned out, if only... Pete freezes. Again, this feeling of cold, paralyzing limbs. For the last month, he has been experiencing it, being in a variety of places. It was as if someone - secretly - has been watching him all this time.

Someone unkind.

Pete slowly breaths in the evening air. He knows that you can get rid of chills if you try not to let them go into a tremor all over the body. So he needs to relax somehow.

There is a crackling sound from the side. Pete notices a couple of - judging by their appearance - alphas coming around the corner.

"Look, Nat, who's here," one of them grins, "didn't your parents tell you, chick, that you can't walk alone late at night?"

Pete doesn't move. And why shall I? They're coming closer now. And... sensing nothing, they will let off a couple of humiliating jokes, laugh and get out.

But not..

The alphas take him in a half-circle, so that Pete finds himself pressed back against one of the buildings in the old courtyard.

"Go your own way. There's nothing interesting for you here," Pete says indifferently.

"Why not?" the second alpha sneers, and the blade of a folding knife glitters in his hand.

For a moment, it flashes in Pete's head: if this is the end, maybe it's not the worst one? Maybe it should be perceived as liberation?

Pete closes his eyes. Well, let it be. He has nothing to lose.

Suddenly, a loud hissing starts coming from the ground. All three of them stare in horror at a whole host of snakes that have come from nowhere, rapidly approaching them. Two "brave" alpha males in an instant forget about their "prey" and run away. And Pete, who has been afraid of creeping creatures all his life, is shackled by icy fear. With a cry, he loses consciousness, not having time to notice how the snakes stop writhing on the ground, being frozen a meter away from him.

Warm jets of air wash over the face. Wind? Something hard under the cheek and... alive? And very cold... hands? that hold his weak body.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Pete realizes that he is alive. But where is he, who is he with and what will happen to him next...

"Pete!"

Uh... Dad?

The omega opens his eyes. He's in his bedroom. A worried parental face hangs over his bed.

"You've finally come to your senses! Father and I almost went crazy when we found you at the door. Did you get sick? Do you feel dizzy now?"

Pete may have woken up, but he clearly didn't come to his senses.

"You don't remember how you got home?"

Pete shakes his head. He is ashamed that he brought another hassle to his parents. But it's better for them not to know about his "adventures".

"Okay. The best thing for you right now is to sleep. Tomorrow is an important day."

"Why?" Pete asks in a weak voice.

"You'll find out tomorrow."

"And if I find out today, will tomorrow become a less important day?"

The senior omega adjusts the edge of Pete's blanket:

"We will have a special guest."
