The question sounds unexpected for Vegas. There's no point hiding this. But he takes a short pause, and then answers the question with a question:

"What makes you think so?"

If he had answered simply "no," Pete would have sworn: he would have blocked further outbursts of curiosity. But Vegas himself — behind the scenes — turned on the green light for the omega:

"Uh... Was it or wasn't it?"

"Why asking?"

And again "failure", Vegas... how badly you've figured me out yet.

"Because I want to know. But you are avoiding the answer. As always."

"Pete."

"What?"

"I'm not avoiding the answer," Vegas touches the dolphin on the bracelet, and this gesture takes omega off guard for a split second, "I can't know for sure. Anyway, I haven't heard of an ancestor with that name."

Pete squints:

"So you could have answered right away. And you're always starting to intrigue."

"Pete, try to understand, I..."

"What? What should I understand? I've told myself hundreds of times: I need to wait, your husband will be able to trust you, Pete. But the mysteries are being added and added. And I'm afraid that at some point their solutions will pour out on me in one deadly stream, and what will I do with it all? It's like I'm a little fool who is allowed to know only what you allow... I'm sorry, but that's how I feel about the whole thing."

Pete doesn't want to do this at all, he doesn't want to quarrel at all when they took such a step towards each other, but he impulsively pushes the plates away and gets up from the table to hurry to his room. There he sits down on the edge of the bed and dejectedly drops his head on the hands. In less than two minutes, a cool muzzle begins to poke from the side.

"Little brat..."

Pete takes his hands off his face and smiles with effort: this baby is always in a hurry to comfort him. Pete opens his palms like a cup, and the smart newt is on them in no time. Then the omega raises his hands higher. So that Macau's eyes are on a par with his face.

"I want him to trust me and without fear to be himself next to me... But how can I convince him of this? It's just impossible... and I can't bear to live here when he doubts me so hard!"

Pete bites his lip. He won't lie if he says that a drop of tears is rolling down from the corners of Macau's eyes. He had never imagined that newts could cry at all.

"Hey, what are you doing, little brat?"

Pete hugs Macau and lies down on the pillow with him:

"I'm not going to leave you, little brat.. I promised him that too. I just... would like to have more clarity. But it seems that this will have to wait again."

Later in the evening, after finishing classes and preparing for new ones, Pete goes down to the living room. He expected Vegas to be in the study, but finds him standing near the window. His gaze is fixed on the hilltops visible in the distance, and his fingertips gently stroke the bracelet.

"Did you really like this little souvenir?"

Pete gets so close that his nose grazes Vegas' shoulder.

"Really," the alpha smiles at him affably. "Is everything all right?"

Not quite. But damn all those puzzles! Today I just want to be with you.

"Yes," Pete puts his chin on the husband's shoulder. "So... evening go-outs around the city are no longer in trend for a married couple?"
