February 2014

"That lad has been staring at you for the last ten minutes," Immy's co-worker, Chloe, told her one Sunday afternoon as they were preparing to shut the shop. Immy glanced out of the window to see who Chloe was talking about. She spotted him straight away, leaning against the litter bin just outside the window. He was tall with shoulder length dark brown hair, and he was very cute. Immy blushed as he caught her looking at him and smiled at her. "He was in here earlier when you were on you lunch break. He asked your name and whether you were single." Immy blushed even more.

"What did you tell him?" she asked the pink haired girl.

"I said your name was Imogen and that he'd have to ask you himself if you were single when your shift finished. Looks like he's going to."

"Chloe, what do I say?" Chloe laughed at the look of sheer horror on Immy's face.

"Oh Immy, don't look so horrified. He's really cute! I wonder what hair care products he uses."

"But...." Immy began.

"Surely you've spoken to boys before!" Chloe exclaimed.

"Only my best friend Joel, but he doesn't count. I've known him since I was four!"

"He's the tall blonde lad that meets you from work some days?"  Immy nodded.  "He's cute.  Never been tempted? Friend with benefits?" Immy shook her head vehemently.

"Ewww no!! I mean,  yeah he's good looking and I love him to bits, but I could never go there. He's like my brother."

"I would if I was single," Chloe laughed. "Do not tell Liam I said that!"

Immy gave the counter a last wipe down. "Well I'm done for the day. I'm going to make a move." She glanced outside. The boy had disappeared. She breathed a sigh of relief. She'd been very nervous about leaving the shop with him lingering around. She went to collect her coat from the staff room and said goodbye to Chloe and their manager Dawn.

She pushed the door open and headed out into the cold February air and began to walk slowly down the street. She was in no hurry even though the temps were close to freezing. The more time she spent out of the house the better.

She'd walked a couple of hundred yards when she heard footsteps behind her. They were getting closer. She began to feel nervous so she sped up.

"Hey Imogen! Wait, it's ok. I just want to talk to you," came a male voice. She glanced around and recognised the lad that had been staring at her. Her heart began to race. He caught up with her. "Hey."

"Hi," she said nervously.

"May I walk with you?" he asked, falling into step besides her. He didn't have a British accent. He sounded like he was either from Australia or New Zealand, she wasn't sure which.

"Ok," she stammered, not breaking stride.

"I'm Jared," he told her. "Your workmate said your name is Imogen right?"

"Yeah, but everyone calls me Immy."

"Immy, I like it. So have you worked there long?"

"Um, about nine months." Immy felt extremely awkward. She felt a strong attraction to him, she was just so inexperienced. She'd never even kissed a boy, not properly, just pecked Joel on the cheek a few times. Why would this Jared even be interested in her anyway? There so many prettier girls around.

"Have you lived in Stratford long?"

"All my life."

"I've only been here six weeks. My parents decided to move here from Auckland. I wasn't keen on the idea at first, but now I've seen you I can see the benefits," he said. Immy burst out laughing. "That was cheesy wasn't it?"
