After a long, and I mean long, drive I had finally arrived at what seemed like the place. It was a really big building with tons of security around it. I even had to drive through multiple checkpoints to get in, but I got to see a bunch of the guards close up. Most of them looked bored or tired when letting me in, but one gave me a sad look when letting me in.
'Wonder what that last guard was about,' I pondered. Grabbing my things out of the car, I walked towards the doors. Upon entering the building I was approached by another scientist.
"Hello, welcome to Laminax," he sounded tired, "I can only assume you are here for the job?"
"Well... yeah. How did you know?"
"The guards would not have let you in otherwise," he gestured toward my hand. "You also appear to be holding our card."
"Oh,"
"On that note, we need you to sign these few things before we are allowed to hire you. They are for... liability reasons." He said while pulling out a pen and taking a clipboard off of a nearby counter. He handed it all to me, which I quickly filled out, skipping over everything and signing where it told me to.
Upon returning the things to the scientist, he handed me a variety of sciency things: my lab coat, id, and matching attire to what he was wearing. It seemed to consist of black pants and shoes, including a black collared shirt with a yellow tie.
After handing me the last of it, he turned and said, "You will need one of these too." He pulled a card from his coat. "This card will also only let you into permitted areas. Don't lose anything, it makes more work for me. And, in a sense, a lot less for you."
"Don't worry, I won't," I said with confidence before setting the stuff down on a nearby table.
"Now that I have given you what you need, I am obligated to give a minimal tour of the facility, so go get ready and, please, make sure that your id is put on correctly at all times."
I gave a look of confusion. Seeing this he continued, "I say this to make sure you don't end up like one of the employees we sent out to get new hires. He had put his id on wrong the entire time. He retired shortly after due to not meeting his quota; and embarrassment of not properly representing us."
Hearing this I slowly nodded, ignoring that last part, and followed a bathroom sign.
Shortly after entering the bathroom, and finishing putting my clothing on, I looked in the mirror to see how I look. Seeing my blue eyes reflect back at me, I noticed that I looked sciency. Also looking at my brown hair, I noticed it was still messy from sleeping. Seeing this, I poured some water into my hands and then used it to fix up my hair. Getting my hair to a "good enough" appearance; smiling at my reflection when I finished. I walked back over to the scientist who was awaiting me. Seeing me coming, he grabbed a clipboard off the desk next to him and motioned to an elevator that was down the hall.
I saw him enter the elevator and I hastily followed. Upon entering it he spoke again. "There are multiple floors to the facility, you only need to worry about knowing these two." Pointing to one that was a few buttons down from the lobby button, "This one is where your room will be." He clicked it and the doors to the elevator closed and I felt us begin to descend.
"Do I need to share a room with someone else?"
"No, unless things get crowded. Which they are not at the moment." The doors opened and I followed him. We passed by a bunch of closed doors before finally stopping at one.
"Time for some practice, use your card to access this room, it has everything you need in it. The only other people who can access your rooms are higher-ups, but that is only when you are suspected of having something you shouldn't." After saying this he gestured to the scanner next to the door, "Try it."
