I awoke with a strange feeling about today, but I would end up dismissing it as the morning munchies. Ready to start the day, I ecstatically hopped out of bed and began to think about how interesting yesterday was, heck, how interesting today could be. Something that especially interested me was those "gootraxians" and how I would get to be someone who researches them. Getting ready for the day and exiting my new room, I went down the elevator and into the area where I was told to go. I ended up making multiple accidental laps around the lab before arriving in an observation room with protective glass.
Behind that glass was a room with a singular large crystal in it. I was still, somehow, twenty minutes early so nothing had started and only a few scientists were in the room preparing it for whatever was going to happen. So I decided to remain out of the way and went into the corner, deciding to pass the time by spacing out.
"WELL HELLO THERE! You must be new here, like me." I got ripped out of my daydreaming and frantically looked toward the perpetrator. I saw another researcher with brown hair and green eyes that was also around my age. "My name is Liam," he optimistically said while putting his hand out to shake.
"Uhm... I am Matthew, but, uh, you can just call me Matt for short." I said, shaking his hand in response. They coincidentally ended up calling all the researchers over to begin the experiment when we finished meeting each other. We all walked over to the observation window, Liam and I sticking close to each other. Looking through the window we observed the big blue crystal in the room before the door opened and we saw two guards bring in a gootraxian!
The guards bringing the creature in were covered in light body armor and had helmets with masks. However, turning my attention to the gootraxian they were transporting, I saw that it was probably one of the coolest creatures I have ever seen. It seemed to be some sort of crystal cat. It had thick purple fur and these reddish-pink horns, along with crystals all around its body. "Observe the Carneline's behavior, we want to see how it reacts to this room."
'Oh cool, Carneline sounds like such an awesome name!'
Upon making its appearance in the room, and being released, it quickly ran toward a crystal and jumped on it. Its neck fluff released a bunch of tiny clouds of crystals during the entire climbing process. Once it made it on top, it sat up there as if it was safe from any danger. All of the researchers quickly jotted down notes. But apart from that though, it just stayed on top of the crystal.
When our observation time came to an end, which was about thirty minutes, the guards came back into the room and looked up at the crystal, causing the Carneline to stick its pink tongue out at them. Even though they were behind the observation glass, we could still hear them both loudly sigh as they began to try and get the creature down from the crystal.
Everyone else ended up leaving the room while Liam and I both watched the guards for the next thirty minutes attempting to get the creature down, frustration evident with how angrily they grumbled when the gootraxian readjusted itself to avoid their attempts. All the while the Carneline was taunting them from atop the crystal. It was like watching one of those comedy shows.
"Wow, that goo sure acts a lot like another person," Liam remarked.
"Yeah, that is a little strange, isn't it?" I said before ecstatically continuing, "But look at how awesome it is, and it's clearly super smart for getting the high ground too!"
"Yeah I guess, but remember it is just an animal. It's all instincts. Oh hey look, I think they figured something out," Liam said, pointing towards one of the guards who had come back with a brick.
'Huh, I wonder what he is gonna do with that?'
To which I got my answer when I saw him proceed to chuck it as hard as they could at the creature. The brick directly impacted the Carneline's chest, causing me to wince as the poor creature lost its balance and fell down onto its back.
Upon seeing the Carneline stunned, the guards cheered, high-fived, and then jumped into action, pulling out some sort of collar and lunging at the creature to contain it. The Carneline panicked and quickly scrambled out of the way. Leading to both guards missing their lunge. Seeing an opportunity, the Carneline grabbed one of the guards and shoved them into the crystal. And, to our shock, the crystal cut effortlessly through the guard's clothing and stabbed through his side. He began panicking and ripped himself off the crystal before falling on his back in pain.
"I-I don't see any blood, maybe it didn't pierce his skin?" Liam stuttered out optimistically.
But when we focused our attention back on the room, we noticed that his skin began turning blue and seemed to form... scales? Rips and cracks could be heard throughout the room and, as if time itself froze, we watched in fear as a tail and multiple crystals sprouted out of his back, ripping his armor apart. His yells of pain stopped suddenly as his mask fell off and revealed purple eyes with yellow rims.
Liam and I panickly turned our gaze to the other guard to see that he was terrified of his friend's fate. Upon seeing that it had taken one guard down, the Carneline continued its onslaught. Swiping its claws at the other guard's arm. The claws connected and effortlessly sliced through the protective clothing on his arm and into his skin, causing him to yelp in pain and snap his eyes from his now-turned-friend to the Carneline. Fearing the same fate, we could only watch as the guard panickly pulled out his baton and yelled as he wildly swung at the gootraxian, only for it to duck out of the way and tackle the guard to the ground. And, to the guard's dismay, the goo that was on Carneline's body quickly spread onto his weakened body.
He struggled as best he could but couldn't escape their grasp and fell to the ground as the Carneline stood back. The goo on his body quickly changed him and caused fur, a tail, and crystals to sprout from his body. He opened his eyes, revealing pinkish-purple eyes that glowed. And, seeming as if it had erased both of the guards' minds, they stopped all hostilities and joined the goo's side. Seeing that it had won the fight, they all ran out of an open door to escape.
No words were said between Liam and me as we unanimously decided that it was time for us to leave. We quickly ran into the hallway and went to go to a safer area. Only to see the Carneline and the two other gootraxians round the corner and come towards us. We froze as the Carneline stopped and quickly looked around for something. We could only watch as the creature saw a vent, ran towards it, pulled off the unscrewed cover, and crawled in. And to our terror, the other two began approaching us rather than following the Carneline. We slowly backed up in fear, but luckily two guards rounded the corner with tranquilizer guns and quickly took out the gootraxians before they could get closer.
Seeing the guards caused us to ease up a little. After a few moments, a different, yet more professional-looking guard with a tranquilizer gun came around the corner and saw us. "You two need to vacate the area, the other gootraxian could still be around here," he said in a gruff voice, in response we went to head out. "Stay away from any vents. Remember this, you saw nothing. Everything is under control." With that Liam and I quickly left the area and headed toward the cafeteria. Still shaken up, both of us sat down after grabbing some sodas.
We just sat there for a good couple of minutes until Liam broke the silence. "W-well... that was quite the experience, wasn't it?" he nervously added.
"Yeah... I just really hope what happened to those guards doesn't happen to us. I can't unsee their fear as they turned." Worry laced my voice as both of the guards' fates replayed in my mind.
Seeing this Liam offered a reassuring smile while telling me not to worry. "I bet this type of thing rarely happens. Besides," he threw a comforting arm around me. "We are friends now, we got each other's backs."
I let out a nervous laugh. "Yeah... I sure hope so..."
