At the end of the party we held hands as we started to walk to my room, but we saw Hope on the couch covered in dirt. She said "Hey." Raf said "Hey. Rough night?" she chuckled "Um... no. All evidence to the contrary. I actually had a lot of fun. What about you two?" he pulled me closer "About that... I was straight with Lizzie." Hope stood up with us and hugged me as she said "Well, um, you and I now have our own Avengers squad." I said "We do?" she laughed "Well I ain't leading them myself." Raf held his free hand out to Hope and said "You want to see if I still got it?" she looked at me and I smiled so she said "Why not?" and took his hand, I went to back away but he held my hand tighter and said "Oh no, you cannot escape. You look like you took a bath in the dirt." Hope said "Oh, thank you." he said "You're welcome." she said "No, actually, you wouldn't believe the night that I had. I, um, decided to take your advice..." he said "You did?" she said, "Don't get used to it, neither Em nor I change our minds often." I said "Come on, let's head up." he said "Hold on." he pulled me away from my sister and kissed me, it shocked me for a second, but then I kissed him back. Hope said, "Damn, maybe you should go to his room." I pulled away and rolled my eyes at my sister, "Nice." he wrapped his arms around our shoulders and we started to walk to the stairs. Raf froze "Cassie?" a girl covered in dirt sat on the couch with Dr. Saltzman she said "Raf." I said "Cassie?" Hope said, "Isn't that your...?" he said "My girlfriend. Dr. Saltzman." Raf glanced at me and even though it hurt I said: "Well go to her Raf, dead girlfriends don't come back to life all that often."

I leaned against my sister as he ran to her and hugged her, she said "I know why." I said "Why what?" she said, "Why she came back, let me show you?" I looked at her before glancing at him again and took her hand "Lead the way." she took me to the werewolf transition cellars, and I saw a really ugly man and Alaric. Hope said "Dr. Saltzman." the man said "Oh, there you are, lovely girl. I was wondering if you'd come to visit me again. How's your friend, the one I saw you with earlier, trying to steal an illicit peek at me? As we speak, he's having an emotional reunion with his dead girlfriend. And you brought a friend, you are?" I said "Emberlyn Mikaelson." he winced "Ooh I've heard about you, you're almost as bad as me." I groaned "Who the hell keeps telling this damn tale to all the monsters?" she laughed "I assume we have you to thank?" he said "Poor dear. Her spirit was clinging to him like a vine in winter. It took barely any effort. Just a little wrinkle of the nose, and poof. Young love is reborn. You're lucky that's all I did. The way you've treated a man of my stature, you should be ashamed." I said "Literally nobody knows who you are." he scoffed "That's impossible." Alaric said "I'll check on Raf." he said, "I-If you want an end to this misery, simply bring me the knife and I'll be - on my way..." Alaric yelled at us "Ember! Hope!"

We caught up with him, Hope said "I take it things aren't going well?" Alaric said, "He's a diva." I said "So what's the plan? I know you don't want to give over the knife, but we can't have him raising the lost loved ones of every person in this school." he said "I will handle it. I have questions that need answers." Hope said "Okay, well, I'm not sure your methods are the most effective." he said "Hope. I said I will handle it. Now, both of you, just stay away from him." he walked over to Raf and Cassie, Hope said "Come on." and we headed to the library to meet up with Dorian. Hope said, "Find anything yet?" Dorian said "Necromancy is everywhere in occult literature. It's a form of sorcery that dates back to ancient Greece. It involves the ability to communicate with and raise the dead. But there's nothing about a specific necromancer, so whoever this dude is, he's been erased from history like every other monster that comes looking for the knife." Hope said "Is there any way to stop him from bringing back dead people? Because if this week is any indication, it's kind of becoming a thing." Dorian said, "I'll look into it, but tomorrow's my day off, so it might take a minute." I said "Evil never takes a holiday, Dorian." he said "Well, every year on Remembrance Day, I do. I write my letters, pack my lunch and I head to the cemetery and ring that bell in honor of my dead family. So for the next 24 hours, ask Dr. Saltzman." Hope said "Fair. But we're worried about him. Do you think he's okay?" he said "I think after the week he's had, he needs a nap. And a therapist. Maybe even a vacation of his own. Take these to him for me, would you?"

She grabbed the books and we went back but he was still talking to Raf and Cassie so I headed to the cellar, my sister right behind me. The necromancer said "Ah. Ooh. You both have a powerful scent of death on you. Uh-huh... It's quite lovely, really." Hope said, "We thought maybe we could talk." I twisted my wrist and his shackles fell off. He sighed "Such a puny creature dares to alliance with The Almighty Necromancer?" I said "Well, here's the thing about that. You don't exist." he said "I won't fall - for your mind games." she said "This isn't a game. Let me lay it out for you. You died, you were in a dark place for what felt like an eternity until suddenly, you were pulled into the light with a singular, inexplicable mission to retrieve a knife." he said, "Do continue." I said "It's been the same with all the creatures that came before you. A dragon, a gargoyle, a... an Arachne, a dryad." he said "Bah. Such creatures exist only in fiction." she said "No. They've been erased from history, and so have you." he laughed "That's preposterous. I'm world-renowned. People tremble at the sound of my name." which made me giggle as she said "Don't believe us? Read up."

We sat in chairs and watched as he read the books then he inhaled sharply and threw a tantrum "No! No! No! No! No! No! A lifetime's work, my legacy, reduced to something as-as pitiful as a brand of sorcery? Where I am barely a footnote? Who's responsible for this vile affront?" she said "That's what we're hoping you can help us figure out." he controlled himself, picked up his chair, and sat down "Well, then, I'm all ears." she said "If you want to get to the bottom of this, we need to know who's communicating with you." he said "No one's communicating with me. My mind is a steel trap." I said "But you knew to resurrect Dr. Saltzman's dead fiancée right after he mentioned her to the dryad. That's why he had questions. It can't be a coincidence. You're all coming after the same thing, communicating in some way, so who's pulling the strings?" he got angry again "I am no puppet. It's less a voice, and more an instinct. I simply know things." Hope said "Like you know you're here to retrieve a knife and return it to a place called Malivore." he said "If I return the knife to Malivore, I will be free." she said "Of what?" he said "The blackness. The void. The empty oblivion." I rolled my eyes "Do you ever just say things once? And more importantly, do you know how to get there?" he said "Only that the knife will lead me." she held up a symbol she drew and he gasped so she said "I'm assuming you know this symbol." he said "It is the sign of the worst existential nightmare. The ultimate hell. The..." I cut him off "You're doing it again. Focus. What does it mean?" he said "That symbol represents what you say has happened to me. It means no one remembers you. No one celebrates you. No one mourns you. Loosely translated, it means permanent death."

Hope said "Do you remember how you died?" the necromancer said, "I was wandering the beach of Normandy in need of a pick-me-up, so I thought I'd resurrect a few G.I.s to toy with some nazi." I said "I'm glad to hear even evil creatures don't like nazi's." he said "Nobody likes nazis. One minute, I'm dancing with the dead on the sand, and the next, there was just blackness." I said "But you don't remember who killed you?" he said "No, although that's not uncommon. The subconscious has a way of protecting the mind against the trauma of death. I see it all the time in my line of work." Hope said "But theoretically, that memory still exists. Right? What if there was a way to access it?" he said "You two want to take a walk through my subconscious Oh, oh, oh. Well, at your own peril, my dears. 'Cause I'm not sure you're quite tall enough to ride the scary rides, huh? I assume you've got a powerful vampire handy?" we both said "Absolutely."
