INDIGO AND JULIE WERE GOING to watch a movie and indigo suggested they get some popcorn, so she went downstairs to go and make some for them.
"ah! i'm never gonna get used to that." indigo jumped when she saw luke standing in front of the fridge.
indigo sighed. "do you guys even eat?" she asked. "i just wanna see what'cha got." luke said.
indigo grabbed a half a stick of butter from the fridge and the closed it. "hey! you know how long it took me to open that?" luke said following indigo.
"sorry, i don't believe in wasting power." she nodded. "good. because that's exactly what i wanted to talk to you about." luke said.
"our power usage?" indigo said, putting the popcorn in the microwave, while she melted the butter in a pot.
"no. the power that you have. your voice. julie's piano playing. dude, you guys are like two human wrecking balls." luke said, standing next to indigo.
she chuckled. "is this a pep talk?" she asked. "what i'm saying is that you guys have the power to move people. to knock them off their feet. there is no way your teachers wouldn't let you both back into school if they heard you guys kill it like that." luke said.
"we asked her. she said we have to wait until next semester."
"that was your first mistake. asking." luke scoffed, and sat on the counter.
"sunset curve booked gigs by doing. we went into ambush mode. we played in front of clubs. we played in back of clubs. we even played book clubs."
"book clubs?" indigo laughed. "yeah. we didn't get many gigs out of that one, but they did have some gnarly snacks." he laughed. indigo stared at him in confusion.
"i'm just saying, don't ask for permission. swing that wrecking ball of talent at your teacher's head, and smash those stupid rules right outta their brains." luke said swinging his legs around and standing up again.
"this isn't a club, it's a school, and your plan sounds violent" indigo said taking the popcorn out the microwave and putting it in the bowl.
"it's a closed door, and you gotta bust it open." luke said, putting his head through an open cabinet.
indigo shut it, and walked to the other side of the kitchen.
indigo rolled her eyes at the boy. "sorry. once i start with the metaphors, i can't stop." luke said following indigo to the stove.
"i learned that in book club." he smiled.
"they're not just gonna let me back in." indigo said, pouring the melted butter on the popcorn and shaking it.
"if getting back into music is what you want, then you gotta go for it."
"learn from me. your tainted hot dog could be right around the corner." luke said and indigo looked at the piece of popcorn she was about to put in her mouth.
she sighed, she was planing on enjoying that buttered popcorn. "i don't even have anything prepared." she said.
"thought you'd say that." luke said pulling a paper out his pocket. "it's called bright. it's a sunset curve song i wrote that we never got to record."
"but it's perfect for your range. check out the chorus for a second. if you add a bit of piano, i'm telling you..." luke carried on and indigo stared at him.
"and rise, through the night, you and i we will fight to shine together. bright forever." luke sang.
indigo watched him, her eyes furrowed. she read the notes on the paper and started to imagine the song in her head.
it was pretty good.
"and rise through the night, you and i we will fight to shine together" indigo sang along with luke, looking at the lyrics.
"go up high." luke said. "bright forever" they harmonized. "yes!" luke said jumping.
"thanks." indigo said holding the paper in her hand. luke chuckled a bit and he shrugged.
indigo went upstairs, smiling at luke halfway up. she had to admit, his plan was pretty genius. and the song was pretty good, so showing it to the world wouldn't be so bad.
"hey gogo, what took you so long." julie said when indigo got to her room. "luke."
"your type is dead guys now?" julie joked. "julie!" indigo said, shocked.
"anyways, he gave me this whole speech about not wasting our power, just showing principal lessa and mrs. harrison that we belong in the program. by singing a song."
"we can't make a song in a night though." julie said. "he gave me a song called bright. apparently it was a song he wrote that they never got to record." indigo said handing julie the paper.
julie looked at it, hearing the chord as she saw the notes. "it's a really good song, the lyrics are really smart. i could add some piano." julie said.
"great we can do it in the morning."
"morning? no, right now. let's get to work." julie said putting on her slippers and walking out her sister's room.
"oh and whatever happened to the popcorn?" julie asked as they walked.
indigo chuckled awkwardly, "you never know, it could be our tainted hotdog."
julie looked at her sister in concern. "oh...." she trailed off.
