The clock read 2 p.m.
Rose's school day that Thursday was over for the day, and she was packing her school supplies into her backpack, since the school bell had just finished ringing. Before she could even get up, she heard a shout from the door. She looked up and saw Steve standing in the doorway, giving her a quick wave.
The two had met in the parking lot earlier this morning and arranged to meet right after school.Rose waved back, put on her backpack, and walked over to him. A few more classmates pushed past her before she got to him.
"So, do you have any idea what we're even going to do now?" he asked her when she had arrived within earshot. She shook her head.
"Not really, you decide. I just have to go to my locker for a minute, will you come with me quickly?" she looked at him, already running, Steve following her.
Even from a distance, Rose saw a problem coming for both of them, or rather Steve. She had her locker all the way in Nancy Wheeler's locker.
And the very same one was standing at her locker right now, with Jonathan. Awkwardly, the two were kissing when Steve looked up.Rose quickly looked over at him with a slight hint of panic. His face immediately contorted into a blank stare. Just as she had thought, he hadn't known that Nancy had a new boyfriend. After all, it had only been a few days. He stopped now, rooted to the spot, as she arrived at her locker.
Nancy looked over, noticed her ex-boyfriend and turned slightly pink in the face. She whispered something to Jonathan, then straightened her shoulders and walked over alone.
"Uhm...hi." she said in a slightly shaky voice when she arrived. Steve didn't look directly at her, but stared past her at Jonathan.
Roselyn felt a little uncomfortable in this situation, but she would definitely stand by Steve. She didn't want him to have to go through this alone. Nancy now looked at Steve a little uncertainly.
"Steve..well... I don't know what to say...I-" she continued.
"I don't even want to hear it." he interrupted her harshly, avoiding eye contact with her.
"Yes, you do! It wasn't planned that way. Jonathan brought me home the night of the party after you suddenly took off. And that's when it just happened" Nancy explained, her voice getting harder as she mentioned that Steve had left. The latter reacted directly in a flaring manner.
"Suddenly left?? You told me this was all bullshit, what was I supposed to do?
Besides, I had more important things to do then!" He gave her a hurt look. Nancy looked at him in disbelief."More important things? Than your girlfriend? What's supposed to have happened that's so important?" she inquired, upset.
Steve pointed to Rose's wound on her left eyebrow. Nancy's eyes widened.
"What, why would you have cared?" Whew, that one sat hard. Kate glanced nervously back and forth between the two. Her eyes flitted briefly to Jonathan, who also looked like he'd rather be somewhere else right now. He probably didn't hear the whole conversation, but the uncomfortable tension was clear. There was a brief moment of silence. Steve quickly looked back and forth between the two girls. Then he turned to Rose, put his right hand on her back and jerked her towards him, came very close to her face and pressed a kiss on her. She was so irritated by the situation that she did nothing for a few seconds. Steve quickly dissolved the kiss, let go of Rose and looked Nancy straight in the eye.
"Because I care about my girlfriend!" he blurted out. But Nancy had already turned on her heel. She hurried to Jonathan, pulled him along by the arm and quickly disappeared.
