(MENTIONS MURDER/VIOLENCE)
I've somehow managed to get the thoughts of last night out of my mind as i pace my office, still toying with the Autopsy report.

"The...the gunshot wound on Victor's shoulder...no, no, that can't have been from the night...Melanie was either killed by the- no, no, a gunshot wound to the head is fatal...but allergies are fatal too...then why-"

"Erm, excuse me Boss?" i'm dragged out of my pacing and angry thoughts by my assistant stood in front of my desk, along with four officers.

"Hmm? Yes, Holly?"

"There's an incident on Floor Two, the Department has gone into lockdown."

"What's the situation?"

"There's a father of a murder victims case we didn't solve holding, he identifies as Paul Senior, 5-10 unarmed officers and detectives at gunpoint, we sent Sgt. Andy down there a few minutes ago and he hasn't come back since."

"Don't worry Holly, i'll handle it, i want everyone to lock themselves up here and not come out until i say so." i grab my baton and slide it up my jean-covered calve.

I hope i don't have to use it.

I crept down the last few stairs and stayed hidden.

I saw a man, holding one of my police officers at gunpoint. Beside him is a black suitcase.

The worst thing that could be in that suitcase is a bomb.

I should go for gun over bomb; that seems more like an imminent threat to everyone surrounding him.

The eerie silence gets deep into to my diaphragm, twisting me in ways you can't imagine.

I match eyes with one of my detectives, Elijah. He motions for me to hide behind his large frame so i can make my way around to take our culprit by surprise.

I hide in a small space between a cupboard and the floor fridge.

I suddenly realise; baton won't do anything. He'd shoot me dead in a matter of milliseconds.

I take light steps toward his back...and i leap onto him.

My weight wasn't enough to bring his body down to the ground, so i grabbed tight hold of his wrists and banged his gun-flexed hands against the nearest wall, and after smashing against it enough times the gun falls to the floor, which the held captive police officer makes fast work of nabbing.

He shoves me up against a wall, pinning me there until i stopped fighting.

But i didn't.

He continues to grunt and moan as i keep fighting him.

I just need to get him on the floor and contain the situation.

My colleagues look like they're about to step in, but i wave them off.

I have this.

...but i clearly didn't.

The gunshot came by so quickly i didn't even see it.

Any thoughts i had about how he got hold of the damn gun in the first place empty my mind as I just lay there, on the floor, helpless, like Melanie did on the 10th of April, 2002.

I bleed out on the floor, and my eyes close...but i see light; not darkness.

Whatever happens to the outside world is beyond me as i drift off into an eternally lasting deep sleep.

Am i in heaven? I have no clue, but i see an angel before me.

It's Melanie.

But it can't be, can it?

I've heard of psychological effects on the brain after death such as seeing past loved ones, but i've never met Melanie. She died before i was welcomed into the world. The only imagine i have seen of her is her lifeless body, laid out in a black tarp, her head crushed.

"M-melanie? How is this possible? Am i dead?" her kind smile warms my soul, "No, sweets. It's not your time yet. You're on your way back."

"Why are you here? It's nice to meet you..."

"Tell Lauren i love her. She's picked a fine woman in you, Emma."

"Thank you...but why are you here? Are you here to give me a message?"

"I know you're trying to find out what happened to me all those years ago. Trying to vindicate my death."

"Yes, i-"

"Don't do it."

"I'm sorry?"

"Stop. You'll end up hurt. You and Lauren need to move on and forget about me."

"There's no possible way i can do that...what Victor did to you-"

"Will only bounce back on you, sweetheart. Please, keep yourselves safe, and forget about me..."

Before i can ask more questions, she begins walking in the other direction, toward the light, "Wait! Melanie, don't go, i have so many questions!"

"Lauren is waiting for you, Emma. Go to her."

I'm sucked out of this dream world by a pair of strong yet dense hands wrapping around my own, light kisses being pressed to it.

"Mm..."

"Emma, love? Are- are you awake?"

"Lauren? I- i-"

"Don't try and speak. The doctor needs to check you over."

"Lauren, i'm sorry..."

"Why are you sorry? You didn't know that scumbag was going to shoot you." she leans over and pulls me into her embrace, her arms wrapping around me like a protective armour i swore to never take off.

"I- i can't help but think how scared you felt..."

"Emma, come on, stop worrying about me."

"I can't help it. I promise i'm not going anywhere." my need to give her reassurance only spikes up when i remember the dream i had.

"You'd better not." she uses several fingers to lift my chin and insert a kiss on my lips.

I know she's putting on a brave face, but i don't think that the surface is showing it's true colours...
