Me and Hunter were at the Night Market, a hot spot for petty crime. We often went there, in all honesty. We had a kinda competition to see who could catch the most criminals in one night. It was almost like a game, sometimes. Not that night, though.
Hunter had heard rumours that wild witches were trying to invade Emperor Belos's mind, and decided it was our duty to stop them.
We followed the witches into a back alley. There were three of them, all shrouded in dark cloaks that covered their faces. After setting up the spell, one raised a hammer made of abomination goop above a vile of some kind of potion.
Hunter nodded to me and we jumped out from our hiding place. I brandished my spear and Hunter held out his Emperor's staff.
"Halt!" He yelled. "For crimes against the Emperor, you are under arrest!"
"Hunter!"
I stepped aside as a girl appeared out of nowhere. She jumped onto Hunter's back and the two fell to the ground. I recognised the girl as Luz, the human.
"Hey." She sat up and pulled out a pen. "Can I bug you with a few questions?"
"Human!" Hunter yelled, sitting up.
"Hunter!" I yelled, tightening my grip on my staff.
One the witches pulled out a flute and started playing. Their cape billowed in the wind and smoke swirled around them, obscuring my vision.
I yelled and swatted the air, stepping back and out of the smoke. Hunter started yelling. By the time the smoke cleared he was stood with both fists in the air.
"I forbid you to flee!" He yelled.
"That's not how it works." I said.
Hunter groaned and took off his mask. He turned to face me and Luz.
"Human! Do you know what you've just done?!" He held out his hand and Flapjack appeared in it in staff form.
"Messed up a perfect arrest, that's what she's just done!" I yelled, standing behind her.
Luz looked up at me curiously.
"Are you that weird nobody Eda told me about?" She asked. "From when you stole my key?"
"Yes!" I yelled, holding my arms out by my sides.
Something smashed. Hunter had stepped on the vile, and the spilled liquid was now glowing gold. As was the spell. Luz stood.
"Uh, what's that?" She asked, walking over to it.
"Hunter, get off the spell," I said, not taking my eyes of the potion.
Too late. I shielded my eyes as golden light shot into the sky and Luz and Hunter screamed. When I looked back the only things left her the potion, Hunter's mask, and Flapjack. The bird chirped and looked up at the sky.
"Fuck," I breathed. Warily, I stepped forward. The markings on the torund from the spell had vanished, and after I put my foot where they'd been I decided it was safe.
I walked over to the items and crouched. Flapjack flew onto my shoulder and I absently petted his head. I picked up Hunter's mask and stashed it under my cloak.
"Hunter?" I called out, looking around. There came no answer.
"I'm so dead."
Flapjack chirped and jumped off my shoulder. He flew away down the alley we'd came, I let him go.
For a minute I just stared at the potion. I picked up my spear and dabbed the blade in the potion. I lifted it to my face and squinted at the glowing yellow liquid.
