We were sat in the portal house. Me, Hunter, Willow, Gus, Vee and Amity. We were sat in the living room, Vee and Amity on the only chairs, me sat on a box behind Hunter, who was sat on the floor with Gus and Willow. We were taking our daily Spanish lessons from the weird owl app Gus found. This part of the lesson involved making weird noises.
"Am I doing this right?" Gus asked after a minute of this.
I shrugged at him and kept making weird sounds. It was kinda fun to be honest.
"Tres tristes tigres comen en tres platos de trigo." Vee said easily.
"Perfecto! You're our top student!" The owl said.
"How?" I asked, confused. Spanish was impossible.
"I was the top student once." Amity muttered.
Flapjack hopped over to us and pecked at the floor. He moved on and kept pecking as he went. He'd been doing that a lot lately.
"He's still doing that, huh?" Gus said.
"He won't tell me what he's looking for." Hunter said.
I rested my chin on the top of his head and slid my arms around his shoulders. "He'll come round."
The door opened and Camila walked in. "Hi. Oh, I like what you've done with the place. No more exposed nails, or possum nests. But this still confuses me."
She pushed the door open and showed our newest decoration. In bright red paint, we had drawn Hooty's face onto the door.
"Sentimental value." I said.
Gus stood and waved. "Hola, Camila. We're learning Spanish from this creepy owl app."
He showed her the tablet. It hooted at her and told her to practice every day or else it'd appear in her nightmares. It did that a lot for some reason.
"Oh, okay." Camila said, slightly confused. "Well, I'm going to pick up Luz from school. Pop quiz! Como se dice eso en español?"
Hunter shot to his feet. He tried, getting out a word or two every few seconds. I smiled at him, he was cute. Then Vee said it easily. Hunter sank back onto the floor, defeated. I patted his head.
"Muy bueno! Keep it up!" Camila said, waving as she left.
"I don't like Spanish." I decided aloud.
"Maybe we should take a break." Amity nodded.
"A siesta." Willow said.
"Siesta!" Gus echoed.
"We've been here for months and we've made no progress on the portal door." Amity said seriously. "We can't expect Camila to take care of us forever."
"In the meantime, we could pull more weight around the kitchen. My mustard ravioli did bring tears to her eyes." Gus said smugly.
"Those weren't the kinda tears you're thinking of." Vee muttered.
"I can help fix damaged clothes." Hunter said. He held up one of his jumpers, covered in badges and patches he'd sewn on himself.
"I can spruce up the garden." Willow said holding up one of her plants.
"I can do all of those things." I said. Hunter threw the jumper at me.
Amity sighed. She looked around and stood. "Maybe we need to look elsewhere. There's an entire Human Realm to search!"
"But Luz has school most of the week." Willow said.
"So?" Amity said. She started to pace. "Let's explore the town ourselves. After all, Luz went into the Bioling Isles on her own."
