Jeremy woke with a start when one of the nurses came to check on Allie. Realising he'd fallen asleep on Allie's bed, the nurse looked disapprovingly. Jeremy flushed, gently disentangling himself and followed her out. He rubbed his hair and said sheepishly, "She couldn't sleep, so I said I'd keep her company for a while, must have dropped off." The nurse, Karen, rolled her eyes, but her mouth turned up, and Jeremy said, "I'll just head off to the on call room then." When Allie woke a few hours later, Karen came in and said, "Morning Allie. Big day honey." Allie sat up and smiled broadly, "Yeah, I'm so excited Karen." The nurse disappeared around the door and reappeared with a tray. "Here's your breakfast honey. Eat that, and I'll come back and help you get ready for your first session." Allie nodded smiling, and Karen laughed, "I found Jeremy Matthews fast asleep on your bed last night, chased him off to his own quarters." Allie laughed, "Awww poor Jem, he was in the OR late, stayed to keep me company because I couldn't sleep. He'd be so embarrassed." Karen laughed, "Yeah, he was, face like a tomato. Lucky it was me and not Clare; she'd have chewed him out."
Allie tried to put all thoughts of going home to one side and concentrate on her first session of physical therapy. Susan came over with Daniel at lunchtime, bringing Allie some comfortable clothes and white pumps. Allie glowed with excitement, and Daniel found it infectious. He reluctantly returned to work for a couple of hours just after Susan had gone, bending down to kiss her. He grinned and said, "I'll be back later to take you home wife." Allie smiled after the door closed and looked excitedly into the bag at the clothes Susan had brought from the house. The door opened, and Jeremy appeared. He came in and said, "Can't stop. You ready to head for the exit later?" Allie nodded and turned the bag around, "Yeah, look, actual clothes!" He grinned and dipped to drop a kiss on her cheek, "Better go, Karen caught me asleep on your bed last night. If she tells Clare I'm a dead doctor walking." Allie laughed, "She told me. Go. Don't get into trouble at this late stage."
Her second session of physical therapy went slowly, and Allie said near the end, "Sorry Kevin. I keep losing focus thinking about going home." He eased her into the chair he'd brought over, "Can't blame you. Must be an epic feeling to be getting out after all these months." He passed her a bottle of water and grabbed one for himself as she drank. Allie smiled, "It really is Kev. I've missed doing the little things for Emmie and Rose you know." Kevin came around the front of the chair and crouched down, "Allie, I want you to know I'm so sorry about what happened to you. I've never heard you complain once, and I wouldn't have blamed you if you had." Allie reached for his hand and said, "Thanks Kevin, that means a lot, and I really appreciate everything you're doing to get me out of this thing." The physio laughed and stood behind the hated wheelchair, "Come on, let's get you back upstairs so you can get home to Daniel and those two beautiful kids."
Robyn and Daniel were waiting in her room, and Robyn went into the bathroom to help her into the clothes Susan had brought. Grinning at the sight of his wife dressed in a soft cotton dress, Daniel helped her on the edge of the bed and then bent down to slip the pumps onto her small feet. Caroline came in with some paperwork for her to sign accompanied by Mat, who said, "Hey, all set?" Allie nodded, and he came over to hug her warmly, "I'm in the middle of a clinic, but I wanted to see you before you left. Take care and I'll see you in clinic next week, okay?" Allie smiled, "Thanks, I'll be really careful I promise." He squeezed Daniel's shoulder as he made his way to the door and said, "I'm sure this guy'll take extra good care of you."
As Mat opened the door to leave, Jeremy arrived and shook his hand. He kissed Robyn and said, "Sorry I'm a bit late. We all ready to go?" Allie nodded, and Daniel pulled the wheelchair over so she could sit in. Robyn and Jeremy grabbed the remnants of her belongings, and they left. When they arrived at the house, Allie waited for Daniel to come around and help her out of the car, passing her the crutches. Jeremy pulled Robyn back and said quietly, "Give them a couple of minutes." Daniel shadowed her slow, deliberate steps to the door and slipped an arm around her waist to steady her while he opened it. He kept hold of her waist as she stepped inside and whispered, "Welcome home Allie." As soon as they stepped into the entrance hall she spotted the banners made by the children and her eyes filled with tears. Daniel pulled her closer and said, "Come on, let's get you to the couch." Robyn and Jeremy stayed for a coffee and had just left when Margie arrived with Emmie and Rose, who both ran to join Allie on the couch where she kissed them rapturously. Margie came to hold Allie and said, "Well done honey. I know how hard you've worked to get back." Daniel put some cookies and milk on the kitchen table for the girls and passed Margie a coffee with a kiss. She drank it quickly and said, "I've given the girls some dinner when they came out of school, and I've left something in the oven on a timer for you guys. I'd better go. Max will be home, and he'll want to know you got back okay." She kissed them both and was gone. Allie cuddled Rose, who had returned to the couch and turned to Daniel, "Can you help me get upstairs so I can help you do bedtime?" He came and sat next to her, "Course." He called Emmie over, "Guys, Mommy and I need your help. It's a bit hard for Mommy to move around still, so we need you to be super good." They both nodded, and he smiled, "Emmie, can you go and start your shower." The ten year old nodded, and he turned to Rose, "Can you take one of Mommy's crutches up with us while I help her on the stairs?" Rose nodded seriously.
