Chapter 4

The Day Before

Tomorrow I'm turning four. I've graduated from Maria's lessons which involved reading, writing, speaking, and some basic math that I already know. It turns out I was actually learning how to write and read five different languages. The five languages were Human, Demon, Elven, Beastman, and ancient Dwarves. Because of the five languages, It was easy to figure out that there were five major races in the world. As for the reason why ancient was added to the Dwarves' language, I have no idea. Apparently, it was going to be taught at a school so Maria didn't bother answering.

Speaking the language was a different story. I was only able to speak human and elven languages as the two were similar in a way. As for the rest, I didn't bother as I would sound like an idiot if I tried. Maria also only knew how to speak human and elven so it was all she could teach. At first, I was confused about why I had to learn all five languages but Maria gave a good answer. She said that when I go to a school, I would encounter all races except for dwarfs. She also said to think about what class I should pick. The choices I was given were: Swordsman, Magician, Ranger, and Warrior which uses fists.

There were only four I could pick as a baseline but each one will branch out whichever one I pick. Maria suggested that I should be a swordsman since I'm a nobleman. But there was nothing wrong with picking whichever.

To be honest, I would rather be a magician than a swordsman so that's what I told her. She told me that magicians are what noblewomen usually pick and the noblemen would usually pick swordsmanship. A girl is forbidden to be a swordsman but a guy can pick whichever between the four. I asked why that is and all Maria said was that it's just how the world works. She then said that there were a few exceptions but most are rejected like Lucia. Luke decided to apply Lucia to a swordsman school without her knowing but she was rejected like she was in Azonia Academy of Magic. That was news to me. I didn't know that Lucia was rejected from the Academy of Magic. I thought that she simply decided not to go and that she would rather live as a housewife.

I asked Maria to tell me a little bit about Lucia from back then. I figured that she was the perfect person as I heard from Tina that she was mostly the one that took care of Lucia. But instead of making life easier for her, she decided to not tell me. I was very annoyed when she did that. So as a normal child, I decided to throw a tantrum. I know it's very childish, but it almost worked. It would've worked flawlessly if a certain maid by the name of Lily did not come to ask Maria for help.

I was going to ask her again if the perfect opportunity comes up. I've been waiting since then and it has been quite a wait really. Ever since I graduated from the lessons, I've barely had the chance to talk to Maria. She's always busy and I didn't want to disturb her work especially when all I do is play around all day. Tina hasn't been all that busy as well ever since she graduated. Her graduation was a few weeks after I graduated. Which would mean I was able to see her use a certain magic incantation in the yard during her graduation.

There were three injured horses and Tina's task was to heal them. Each horse was injured differently and one even had some intestines out. I couldn't tell whether it was still breathing or not. I have to know idea when they set it up and how they even manage to set it up. So I decided to ask one of the maids that were there and all she said was that it was best for me to not know. And I thought so as well.

Tina was able to do the task with no problems and managed to graduate. The only thing that bugged me was that Tina did not use incantation. She was able to heal the horses without moving her mouth. Her hands emitted light and all the horse's wounds were healed. She took a lot of time on the horse that had intestines out. The intestines slowly went back inside the horse's body and the wound slowly closed up. I was pretty amazed by the entire process except for the fact that Tina did not use incantations. After the entire graduation thing was over, I decided to congratulate Tina and ask her about it.

Apparently, the book I read that was called Magic is Fun was an ancient children's magic book. It was preserved in my old home as some sort of memento. As for the contents of the books, a lot has changed since then and the principles of magic are different from what was written in the book. The incantations written in the book will still work when spoken. But people nowadays use wordless incantations and follow different principles of magic. Tina also said that Maria would teach me the basics if I were to choose that as my class. Which is very likely I would say.

Turns out I wasn't the only one interested in learning magic. Sistine has also taken interest in magic which made me very happy. That means I would have someone to talk to about it. I could technically talk to Tina, but I got the feeling that she simply learned magic because it was necessary for her profession. From what I've heard, personal maids like Tina need to know basic magic, especially healing magic. And from what I've seen, every noble has one by their side. I based this on what Sistine told me since no one in the manor really tells me stuff. Except for Tina because they also don't tell her anything. Which made me wonder who exactly is Luke's personal maid.

At first, I thought it was Maria. But later on, I noticed that Maria does her own thing and Luke doesn't seem to care that much. So I decided to ask Maria about it. Turns out Luke's personal maid had passed away before Lucia was born and never had a personal maid since then. Maria was Lucia's personal maid but was dismissed when Lucia and Kye went to live at our old home. Lucia at the time decided that she needed to take care of herself without Maria. And I would have to agree with my mother there.

I can't always rely on Tina for the most basic stuff especially when I grow older.

Luke is like this mysterious figure in the manor. Even though he's the head of the manor and probably knows a lot, he's quiet and secretive. Most of the time, I don't even know where he is. I never bump into him in the hallways and we barely spoke to each other these past few months.

I would sometimes sneak into his office to ask him a few things, but most of the time, he isn't there. And when he is, he would make sure that he chose his words wisely so I don't figure out what's happening. So would I end up asking Maria instead. And she would also know nothing. Maria would always say "If Master Luke wants to keep it to himself, then it's probably for the best." Which would really turn me off and give up on asking questions that day.

The questions I asked are easy to answer if I do say so myself. I simply wish to know what exactly happened to my parents, if they're doing well, and what's going on in this world. Three basic questions that could be answered by Luke. It would really lessen his stress if he were to just tell me.

Instead of stressing about it, I decided to put myself in his position. And after realizing that no one would tell a three years old child the hardships of the world, I accepted Luke's decisions once again. But I know for myself that I would still continue to ask in the future.
